To See or Not to See: Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom

Summer will be kicking off in a few days. And, I don’t know about you, but that’s usually when I find television shows start to transition to reruns. But, TNT’s Animal Kingdom may be the gripping new drama that gets us through this lull. Based on the Australian thriller, this T.V. adaptation tells the story of Joshua “J” Cody (Finn Cole) after his mother’s tragic overdose. He’s invited to move in with his estranged grandmother, Smurf Cody (Ellen Barkin). And, things get complicated to say the least. Smurf is the matriarch to four wild sons: Baz (Scott Speedman), Pope (Shawn Hatosy), Craig (Ben Robson), and Deran (Jake Weary). Together and individually, the Cody family has many secrets they’d like kept hidden. And, only time will tell whether blood is thicker than water.

Tonight’s the official premiere of the first two episodes. Although, can we really say that since TNT has already aired the episodes a few times? But, we won’t hold it against them because we’d gladly watch them over again. It’s gripping—at times disturbing—but ultimately Grade A television. This addictive drama is supported by a stellar cast. There are several scenes where I thought the actors were actually brothers. They do a fantastic job depicting their character’s anti-heroic traits and complex relationships. And, Ellen Barkin has never been better. Her performance will send shivers down your spine (in the best possible way)!

This cast is truly outstanding. It’s unfortunate, they won’t be up for EMMY consideration this year. They’re THAT good. For me, it’s rare when I find myself rooting for villainous characters. But, they had me hooked within the first few minutes.
