Ones to Watch: Calum Scott
Music has always been a lifelong passion for Calum Scott, but breaking into the industry was no easy feat. After spending years grinding away in Hull’s local music scene, the singer-songwriter auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent. He captivated the audience and judges with his rendition of Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own”. The performance showcased his innate ability to not only interpret a song, but to also make it his own. It instantly made him a favorite to win the series and earned him Simon’s golden buzzer, however, nothing in life is guaranteed. Calum ended up finishing sixth in the competition and to everyone’s surprise, he wasn’t signed by Simon’s label, SYCO Entertainment.
As the saying goes, “when one door closes, another opens.” Calum released the single, “Dancing On My Own” under the independent label, Instrumental. It spent six weeks on the UK Top 40—peaking at #2—and his initial audition was quickly making waves internationally. To date, it’s been viewed over 108 million times on YouTube.
A year after his run on Britain’s Got Talent, Calum took to Twitter to share the news that he officially signed with Capitol Records. Joining the likes of Sam Smith, One Direction, and Adele, Calum Scott is the latest British artist to become a global superstar. He’s performed on hit television programs including Ellen, Good Morning America, Late Night with Seth Meyers, and dozens more.
He’s currently in the studio working on his debut album, which is expected to be released later this year. I feel confident in saying that it will be one of the best records of the year and one that will have everyone talking. Calum’s talent is once in a generation. Keep an eye (and ear) on him.
While we patiently wait for Calum to drop his full-length album, give a listen to the two singles he’s released: “Dancing On My Own” and “Rhythm Inside”.
