5 TV Shows to Binge-Watch Before Summer Ends

One Day at a Time

During almost every other season, your TV watching schedule can fill up really quickly. In the summer, though, TV tends to slow down, and all our favorite series go on vacation.

Naturally, summer is the perfect time to either catch up on a show you fell behind on, or to start a show you’ve always wanted to. So, while there’s a few weeks left of summer, binge-watch these five shows.

One Day at a Time

If you only have time to watch one show, make it this one. This show is so underrated. It’s laugh-out-loud funny, tackles big issues (like immigration and mental health) gracefully, and is heartwarming. The entire cast has such a great chemistry, too. Of course, Rita Moreno is incredible. I think everyone should be watching this Cuban-American family grow through life together!

Bojack Horseman

You may think that animated shows are not for you, but you’re wrong. Bojack Horseman is not just a satirical look at Hollywood, it’s also an insightful look at life–warts and all. The humanoid animals allow some characterizations take on another layer of meaning (Bojack is voiced by Will Arnett who captures him perfectly). The storylines are varied, poignant, and, at times, quite timely (Mr. Peanutbutter, a dog character who is a popular actor, running for governor, for instance). One of my favorites is Princess Caroline’s (Amy Sedaris) balancing act between her career and wanting a romantic partner and family. You’ll end of meditating on life along with Bojack when you watch this series.

Schitt’s Creek

This is hands-down one of the best comedies on television right now. The Rose family (played by Catherine O’Hara, Eugene Levy, Dan Levy, and Annie Murphy) is a ridiculously lovable riches-to-rags family you’ll ever encounter. Whether you’re watching Alexis (Annie Murphy) getting her first job, or David (Dan Levy) making friends with hotel owner Stevie (Emily Hampshire), you’ll soon discover the tiny little heart beating at the center of Schitt’s Creek. Plus, you’ll have a plethora of hilarious moments to keep you in stitches.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Yes, you do have to like musicals to enjoy this wacky show. Aside from creative musical numbers (a few favorites: “It Was a Shit Show,” “After Everything I’ve Done For You,” “Face Your Fears,” and “I Love My Daughter (But Not in a Creepy Way)”), the show explores platonic and romantic relationships, fears, and life decisions. In the most recent season, it tackled mental health in such a smart way. You’ll be singing and dancing along with Rachel Bloom, Scott M. Foster, Donna Lynne Champlin, Pete Gardner, and more.

Riverdale

This soapy teen drama is the perfect summer show. Make some popcorn and breeze through the deadly mysteries each season (plus, there’s a TON of eye candy…both male and female and young and old). And, although this is based on the Archie comics…forget Archie (K.J. Apa). Jughead (Cole Sprouse) is the real star, in my opinion. So far, season 1 is the best of the three that are currently streamable.

Taraneh

Taraneh has been happily living in NYC for over a decade, but originally hails from the Midwest. Enamored with books at a young age, she grew up making stories, playing make believe, and loving the musical and performing arts. She is great at binge-watching TV shows. Some current favorites: Schitt's Creek, A Court of Mist & Fury, Prince Harry, and The Magicians.
