SDCC 2018: Inside the Deadly Class Press Room

Deadly Class

Class is in session at King’s Dominion Atelier of the Deadly Arts, but this curriculum isn’t for the faint at heart. Here, murder is art, and survival is extra credit.

Based on the comic book series by Rick Remender and illustrated by Wesley Craig, Deadly Class is one of the most anticipated new shows of 2019. Pop Culturalist sat down with the cast and creators inside the press room at San Diego Comic-Con to chat about the adaptation.

María Gabriela De Faría on what attracted her to the project
“I felt like I knew who Maria was. My audition was a self-tape and I only had to do one take. I know this woman. I know who she is. I was dying to play her.”

Lana Condor on making the transition from film to television
“We were very fortunate; we’re working with seasoned pros. I was interested because I’ve never television before. I’ve only done movies, but it wasn’t much different. We shot the pilot like a film—it’s very cinematic. Everyone is so good at their jobs. We’re honored to work with them.”

Lana Condor on what she’s most excited for fans to see
“Based on the trailer, I’m very excited for the audience to see the first time that Maria, Saya, Luke, Willy, Billy, and Master Lin are all together. They’re all staring at Marcus. That scene is so good.”

Lana Condor on getting into character
“The hair, the costume, and the tattoos dropped me in because I don’t feel like myself. I relate to Saya’s darkness and her dark side; I feel that part of her. As long as you let yourself be okay with that darkness, it’s not as hard as I thought it’d be.”

María Gabriela De Faría on relating to Maria
“Maria is bi-polar. I had to do a little bit of research. I believe these characters are very relatable.”

Mick Betancourt on adapting the comic books for screen
“There’s very specific music and cool guest stars. They’re very era-specific, and will turn some of your expectations on their heads.”

Deadly Class premieres January 16 at 10/9c on Syfy.
