5 Best Songs from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (So Far)

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

If you haven’t started watching Crazy Ex-Girlfriend yet, then you’re missing out on a great show with a lot of heart. When I’d first read that there was going to be a new show with musical numbers, I did a little song-and-tap-dance inside my cold bitter shell of a body.

For those of you sad folks who aren’t watching the wonderful Rachel Bloom (who plays main character Rebecca Bunch) and excellent supporting cast, please find a taste of the best songs (in my humble opinion) in chronological order below, which will hopefully convince you to hop on this crazy bandwagon.

1. “West Covina”

This song is in the pilot and sets the stage for the show. A catchy, sweeping tune that’s reminiscent of traditional Broadway musicals, you’ll find yourself humming it later at random moments throughout the day (you’re welcome!!).

2. “The Sexy Getting Ready Song”

A funny, satirical take on how women get ready for dates vs. how men get ready, I love how the show chose to highlight the unappetizing moments of a woman’s toilette against a sexy R&B tune. This is also from the show’s pilot.

3. “Settle for Me”

Another song that sounds more traditionally “Broadway” against an orchestra, here we see Greg (Santino Fontana) asking Rebecca to date him (though he knows her heart lies with Josh, his best friend as played by Vincent Rodriguez III). Again, I love the contrast of the decidedly unromantic lyrics against the romantic music. This song is from episode 4, “I’m Going on a Date with Josh’s Friend!”

4. “Textmergency”

Here I’m jumping to episode 11, “That Text Was Not Meant for Josh!” even though there are plenty of great songs in between episode 4 and 11 because this was such a fun, different song. Primarily sung by folks other than Rebecca, it’s a 90’s hair metal rock band take on when you send a text to the wrong person (if that wasn’t clear from both the title of the song and the episode, GET IT TOGETHER).

5. “Jap Battle”

Yes, this show also has… a rap battle between two “JAPs” (Jewish American Princesses, for those who don’t live on the East Coast). Rebecca and Audra Levin (Rachel Grate) break it down over their lifelong competition to be the best.
