To See or Not to See: X-Men: Apocalypse

X-Men: Apocalypse

It’s been the summer of superheroes—from Batman v. Superman to Captain America: Civil War. And, now we can add X-Men: Apocalypse to that growing list. With Singer at the helm, the film is an enjoyable ride packed with action, comedy, and a few surprises. The biggest of which is that this is arguably my favorite superhero flick of the year.

X-Men: Apocalypse finds the re-emergence of the world’s first and most powerful mutant. After being betrayed by his loyal followers, Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) returns to create a new world order. But, to do so, he must recruit his four horsemen: Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Psylocke (Olivia Munn), Angel (Ben Hardy), and Magneto (Michael Fassbender). With the fate of the world hanging in the balance, Professor X (James McAvoy), Raven (Jennifer Lawrence), Hank McCoy (Nicholas Hoult), and a team of young X-Men must work together to stop this seemingly unstoppable force.

X-Men: Apocalypse is one of those films where you shouldn’t pay attention to the hype (or lack of). While critics have argued it doesn’t reach the same heights as its predecessors—and I agree—you can’t help but leave excited to see what’s in store. And, that’s a major feat considering this is the sixth film in the franchise.

The well-paced film is full of moments of brilliance. Thanks in part to its special effects, cast, and the emotionally poignant storytelling. Bryan Singer does a fine job balancing the characters, action, and drama. It never felt as rushed or overwhelming as it did in Batman v. Superman. And, the new generation of X-Men are shining lights—from the humorous Quicksilver played by Evan Peters to standout performances by Tye Sheridan (Cyclops), Alexandra Shipp (Storm), Olivia Munn (Psylocke), and Sophie Turner (Jean Grey).

If you’re going to see one superhero film this year, it should be X-Men: Apocalypse.
