Pop Culturalist Chats with The Prom’s Caitlin Kinnunen

Caitlin Kinnunen

Caitlin Kinnunen shines in the fantastic musical comedy The Prom. As Emma, the teenage girl longing to take her (secret) girlfriend to prom, Caitlin expresses vulnerability and strength. Her ability to hold her own against a myriad of other strongly comedic actors is no easy feat–and she makes it look effortless!

While Caitlin is no stranger to gracing Broadway stages (she was in Spring Awakening and Bridges of Madison County), The Prom is her first as a lead so we were excited to hear all about it.

PC: What drew you to this project?
Caitlin: The people behind it! They are all so smart and so good at what they do. Seeing everyone who was involved made me instantly say, “yes!” Then, to have it be such a meaningful show with such a strong message was just the cherry on top.

PC: How did you prepare for the role of Emma?
Caitlin: I listened. I listened to the people who have been in her position or similar positions so I could tell their stories as honestly as possible.

PC: What’s the most challenging aspect of portraying Emma?
Caitlin: Staying grounded while surrounded by comedy legends. This cast is full of the most hysterical people doing what they do best. So having to keep a straight face while they all riff off of each other is a challenge–one I welcome with open arms–every single show.

PC: What have you learned from Emma?
Caitlin: I’ve learned to stand up for myself and for others. Emma is so strong in what she believes in. She’s given me the courage to do the same.

PC: If you could swap for a day and play any of the adult character in the show, which one would you play?
Caitlin: Angie! I think it would be so fun!

PC: The Prom has such a wonderful message and shows just how important it is to feel seen and not alone. Have you had memorable interactions with fans?
Caitlin: Yes! I get so many messages on Instagram from individuals telling me how much they relate to Emma and how they finally feel validated and seen. It’s such an incredible thing to share with them, and I feel honored every time someone opens up and tell me their story.
