Pop Culturalist Chats with Tommy Dorfman

Tommy Dorfman

There’s an air of excitement when a young actor makes their television debut. Viewers don’t know quite what to expect. And every so often, we’re treated to an inaugural performance brimming with raw potential. Tommy Dorfman does just that with his role as Ryan Shaver on Netflix’s highly-anticipated original series, 13 Reasons Why—adapted from the best-selling novel by Jay Asher. The series follows Clay Jensen as he uncovers what led to the tragic death of his crush and classmate, Hannah. And you’ve probably already guessed but Tommy’s character is involved! Pop Culturalist was lucky enough to chat with Tommy about his character, the importance of the show, and his advice for anyone dealing with depression.

PC: What initially drew you to the project?
Tommy: It was exciting to have the opportunity to work on Netflix’s first young adult show. Of course, the topic and subject matter inspired me. That’s what brought me to the project.

PC: Did you read the novel before you auditioned? How did you prepare after you landed the role?
Tommy: I read the book during the audition process before one of my callbacks. But I didn’t really let it affect my work on the show because things are a little different on the show than they are in the book.

PC: What similarities/differences are there?
Tommy: The series delves deeper on what the book provides. It expands on all of the characters, Hannah’s voiceovers, and flushes out flashback moments. It gives you more of an idea of what this school is really like.

PC: For viewers that are not familiar with the book, can you tell us a little bit about your character and his relationship with Hannah?
Tommy: Ryan is hyper-intellectual. He’s a poet. He doesn’t have a lot of friends. And he’s really focused on getting into college and getting out of this small town in California. He and Hannah connect through the poetry club. They both have a passion for writing but he does something to disobey her trust.

PC: Did you draw on any past experiences when shaping Ryan?
Tommy: I really related to this character when I read the book and when I got the script. I related to how Ryan felt isolated in high school and how he felt different from everyone.

PC: Besides Ryan, is there another character you’d like to play on the show, or another character you identified with?
Tommy: I think everyone can identify with Hannah. I definitely do. I identified with her being bullied and feeling ostracized and trying to fit into a new school and group of friends; and trying to do the best that she can do.

PC: What was it like working with Selena Gomez and Jay Asher? Did they have any advice for you?
Tommy: Jay’s the genius who created this story and these characters. We really wanted to make sure we did him justice. I think he’s really happy with it. And as far as Selena goes, she’s sweet, humble; obviously very passionate about this project. It was great having her around.

PC: Why do you think the show is so important right now?
Tommy: For one, with this show, we have a very diverse cast. Diversity is really important. And with every character, there’s someone you can relate to, whether it’s because of their race or because of their gender, sexual orientation, or if they’re dealing with mental health issues, sexual assault, or bullying.

PC: Do you have any advice for somebody who might be dealing with hardships?
Tommy: Talk to someone you can trust and talk honestly. We’re promoting suicide hotlines and I’ve used those in the past. My husband has worked for the Trevor Project for a long time and works on the suicide hotline. If you’re dealing with depression or suicidal thoughts, pick up the phone and give it a call, whether it’s the Jed foundation, the Trevor Project, or a national suicide hotline; someone will be there to answer and talk to you.
