Exclusive Interview: Pop Culturalist Chats with Simeon Daise

Simeon Daise is an exciting triple threat who is blazing his own trail in the industry. He kickstarted his career at an early age and has only continued to impress audiences with the complex stories he’s brought to life on the screen. Past credits include projects like The Haves and the Have Nots, American Soul, and Tales of the American South. Currently, he can be seen in his breakout role on The CW’s All American. Pop Culturalist was lucky enough to speak with Simeon about his multifaceted career, All American, and more!

PC: You were exposed to this industry at a young age. Have you always known this is the career path for you?
Simeon: Not always. Starting at such a young age allowed me to know that it was possible, but I still had to find my own way growing up. I’m clearer now about the path I’m on.

PC: Who or what has had the biggest influence on your career
Simeon: I can’t say one particular person or thing. I’ve always admired trailblazers. People who saw what others couldn’t and stuck to their vision until it manifested. I could name so many. Although there are plenty of legends I grew up watching, I’ve always wanted a career that was uniquely my own. I’m set on blazing a legendary trail that someone else strives to emulate.

PC: You’ve had a lot of success already in your young career. When you look back, is there a particular moment that stands out?
Simeon: Honestly, that moment came this year when I had a chance to sit down and reflect with my family in South Carolina. I was looking over a list of goals I wrote the year before and realized I met every single one. I was proud of those accomplishments but even more so proud of how much I had grown mentally. My mindset is so far beyond where it had been when I wrote that list.

PC: In addition to the work you’ve done in front of the camera, you’re also a writer and director. How has your work behind the scenes made you a stronger actor and vice versa?
Simeon: It’s like the popular phrase, “If you lose one sense, the others grow stronger.” Being behind the camera makes you understand the storyline, character development, and dialogue better. I’m able to make certain lines and moments land effectively because I understand the mind of a writer. Being a director makes it easier to communicate with other directors from their point of view. I understand what it takes to create a world, so I can help make a director’s job easier when I’m on camera.

PC: You’re one of the stars of All American, and the series has been incredibly well received. What do you think is resonating most with audiences?
Simeon: I think people have fallen in love with the characters and the topics that are touched on. The show is addicting, and the viewers can see a bit of themselves reflected in every character. Plus, America loves football!

PC: We’re halfway through Season 4. What can fans expect from Jabari’s storyline?
Simeon: People can expect to see more of Jabari’s humanity. He was introduced last season as “the tough guy who punked Spencer.” This season reveals more of his heart and his dedication to a brighter future.

PC: You’ve got a lot of exciting projects in the works. Are there any that you can talk about at this time?
Simeon: I’m real hyped about the Saltwata Vibes documentary that I’m producing along with my sister Sara Makeba and Sherard Duvall. It explores how the new generation of Gullah Geechee people are transforming the culture.
