Exclusive Interview: Sol Romero Talks ‘Cleaner,’ Working with Daisy Ridley, and More

Sol’s multifaceted career has captivated audiences worldwide. Now, she gears up for her eagerly awaited appearance in the upcoming film Cleaner. In this gripping tale, Sol portrays a pivotal role as part of a group of activists who seize control of an energy company’s annual meeting at London’s iconic Shard skyscraper, holding 300 people hostage.

Pop Culturalist had the privilege of chatting with Sol about her flourishing career and her role in the intense and highly anticipated Cleaner.

PC: How did you discover your passion for the arts?
Sol: I’ve been into the arts since I was a little girl, so I feel like I’ve had that passion forever and ever.

PC: Who or what has had the biggest influence on your career?
Sol: Today, mostly my daughter because I love her so much; she always inspires me. But also, my brother and I used to paint together. While painting, he would tell me that if you’re going to do something, do the best you can do. If you’re going to screw something up, screw it up the best you can. That always stuck with me. But looking back, my mom also loved art. We grew up doing art with her. So, overall, my family has been my biggest influence.

PC: There are so many different facets to your talent. How have your experiences as a pop artist lent themselves to your work as an actress, and vice versa?
Sol: I think a lot has to do with the fact that I love art in general. Even though acting is different from singing, at the same time, they are both still art. When you act, it’s not like you are actually a different person. And when you sing, you are singing emotions that you may have yourself or that you imagine someone else might have. So, in a way, it’s like you are a different person singing for someone else. In both scenarios, you can channel your own emotions or those of someone else.

PC: You’re currently working on a new project. What can you tell us about Cleaner and your character in the film?
Sol: I am really excited because I am in a scene with Daisy Ridley, and it’s in Spanish! It was super exciting to have the opportunity to act and speak in my mother tongue.

PC: You’re starring opposite a star-studded cast. What has it been like working alongside Daisy Ridley and everyone involved? Have you learned anything about your own craft from this experience?
Sol: My scenes are mostly with Daisy and Taz [Skylar] is such a funny guy. I really love him; he’s super sweet. It was really fun to meet him, and I’ve maintained that relationship with him. Daisy Ridley is such a great and committed actress and an amazing person. As for what I learned through this experience, I think the main thing is just that I love acting. I love being in front of the camera!

PC: This project finds you reuniting with your husband Martin Campbell, whom you’ve worked with several times in the past. How has that trust that you’ve built as artists and collaborators allowed you to take agency over your character and make choices that feel the most authentic to you?
Sol: I think the biggest thing I see working with Martin is that when I work with him, he is not my husband. He is the director. I can’t be just calling him ‘honey bunny’ and talking with him the whole time. When I’m in this world of his, I’m an actress. I respect him, and I really do look up to him for a lot of things. I’m always very happy to be involved in his movies.

PC: This is such an exciting time in your career. As you look ahead, is there a dream role that you’d love to bring to life?
Sol: I love dramatic roles, so probably something dramatic. But who knows, maybe you’ll see me in a comedy. I’d really love to do a dramatic, Shakespearean role. Maybe one day you’ll hear me saying, “O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?”
