Exclusive Interview: Pop Culturalist Chats with All American’s Hunter Clowdus

Hunter Clowdus

Fast-rising talent Hunter Clowdus has gone from star athlete on the field to leading man on screen. He’s best known for his breakout role as fan-favorite JJ Parker in All American.

Pop Culturalist was lucky enough to speak with Hunter about the new season of All American, his character’s journey, and the mission behind his brand Clowdus Clothing.

PC: How did you discover your passion for acting and storytelling?
Hunter: I think discovery in any given area usually has a catalyst from another area, whether it’s subconscious or, in fewer cases, we are aware. For me, I found my voice in sports. I found that under pressure, I thrived. I learned how to communicate with my teammates and provoke some passion from within them. I learned how to lead.

When I transitioned into acting, I found I had already been practicing the art of communicating for years through sports. Seeing the light bulb go off in someone else’s head because of your words or actions is one of the most humbling and inspiring things I’ve experienced. That is what I am always chasing—the hope to help someone see something in a different light because perspective is empowering.

PC: Who or what has had the biggest influence on your career?
Hunter: I think early on it was my parents. They have always loved me unconditionally and taught me I could do anything I set my mind to. You know as a kid, whatever your surroundings are, that is what you think is normal. You think everyone has it like that, and it’s not until you get older that you realize what you had, or in some cases, what you didn’t. I was beyond blessed with my parents and the outpouring of love they never ceased to shower me with. Still to this day, I could call my mom right now (mind you it’s 1 am on the east coast as I am doing this interview), and she would pick up the phone.

It is monumental for a child to know his or her parents are there for them anytime, anywhere. They taught me some of the most invaluable lessons I have ever learned. We still talk on the phone, at least on a weekly basis, about life, goals, and dreams. Being around that level of constant love and support and a “you can do anything” attitude has undoubtedly helped me get to where I am today.

PC: You’re one of the stars of All American, and the series has been incredibly well received. What do you think is resonating most with audiences?
Hunter: I certainly appreciate that! I think the authenticity is refreshing. I think the writers do a phenomenal job of telling stories that are current. I believe the show has been successful because we’ve been transparent with many of the things that have an impact on people’s lives but are often not discussed or talked about because they are uncomfortable subjects. I’m proud to be a part of such a fearless team when it comes to the truthful storytelling we aim to present every episode.

PC: This is the longest that you’ve lived with a character. Has anything surprised you about the experience? What’s been the biggest takeaway?
Hunter: I am honestly so lucky! It is rare to get the opportunity to live with a character for so long, and I can definitely say I’ve never felt as connected to a role as I do with JJ Parker! I’ve learned through working on finding who he is and what he stands for that it’s ok to fail, it’s ok to be misunderstood. He wears his heart on his sleeve and is unapologetically himself. He cares about others and works really hard to be the best he can be. I never knew I could learn so much from a fictional character, but I certainly have and am forever changed and better for it.

PC: What can you tease about JJ’s arc and future this season?
Hunter: I think you are going to see him continuing to try and find out where he stands in life and what he believes in. I think that we are all kind of on that path just as human beings, but JJ has a way of stumbling and fumbling through that, and it makes him fun and dynamic to watch.

PC: There are so many incredible relationships within the series. Which has been your favorite to explore and why?
Hunter: The camaraderie between the boys has just been an absolute joy to continue living in. The original group of Beverly boys, JJ, Jordan, Asher, and Spencer are such good guys off screen as well and we all get along with ease. Honestly, it will be a sad day when we aren’t working together as these characters every day because we all have created an amazing bond with one another. Friends for life!

PC: You’re also the founder of Clowdus Clothing. Tell us about the company and how it came to fruition.
Hunter: Yeah! It stemmed from my Twitch streams because I had started to build this amazing community and really wanted to give them something tangible that made them feel a part of something bigger. I speak a lot about my name and how it means so much to me, how your actions matter, and how important work ethic is to show gratitude to those who associate with you. As I’ve been fortunate to continue building an amazing community around me, I’ve really doubled down on my principles, and I want people who wear Clowdus Clothing to feel like they can accomplish anything in life if they are willing to work for it.
