Broadway Shows We’re Excited to See This Fall

Fall is the best. And, it’s not just because the trees change colors beautifully and people can wear boots again, but also because a new Broadway season begins. There’s so many wonderful productions coming up, but we have some that we’re particularly looking forward to. Check them out:

The Lifespan of a Fact
Previews begin September 20; Opening night October 18
Based on a true story of a fact-checker and a writer, this play is filled with talent: Daniel Radcliffe, Bobby Cannavale, and Cherry Jones. Also, the director is Leigh Silverman whose stellar work includes Violet (which she won a Tony for), The Way We Get By, and Sweet Charity.

The Ferryman
Previews begin October 2; Opening night October 21
This award-winning play was a huge success in London and is directed by (award-winning) director Sam Mendes so its transfer to Broadway is highly anticipated. Playwright Jez Butterworth is also an award-winner. The play takes place in Northern Ireland in 1981, and is about the family of a former IRA activist.

King Kong 
Previews begin October 5; Opening night November 8
Another classic story to come to stage…only this time one of the stars is a giant gorilla. So, really, we’re mainly looking forward to this new musical to see how they pull that one off. I’m sure it will be jaw-dropping!

American Son
Previews begin October 6; Opening night November 4
A mother is looking for her son as a Florida police station. When the father arrives things get out of hand. That’s about all you need to know about this drama….oh, and the fact that it stars (one of our favorites) Kerry Washington. Joining her on stage are some other really great actors (and theater-faves) Steven Pasquale and Jeremy Jordan.

The Prom
Previews begin October 23; Opening night November 15
From director-choreographer Casey Nicholaw comes a new musical comedy. The premise sounds hilarious: four failing Broadway stars (wanting to kick their careers back into gear) head to a  small town to help a high schooler take another girl to prom. I’m sure the dancing will be clever and so will the songs!

To Kill a Mockingbird 
Previews begin November 1; Opening night December 13
This classic book comes to stage in what sounds like a phenomenal production. Aaron Sorkin is the playwright; Bartlett Sher is the director; Jeff Daniels, Celia Keenan-Bolger, and Stark Sands are some of the cast members.

Network
Previews begin November 10; Opening night December 6
Another import from the West End (and from director Ivo van Hove), this play has also garnered rave reviews and an award for best actor. In fact, that best actor is Bryan Cranston, and he’s transferring to Broadway with it. Another actor in the Broadway show that we’re excited for is Tatiana Maslany.
