Album Review: Fantasia’s The Definition Of…

The Queen of “Rock Soul”, Fantasia, is officially back in the game with the release of her sixth studio album, The Definition Of… This is the first album release for Fantasia in three years and believe me, it was well worth the wait. Working closely with producers like Ron Fair, Brian Kennedy, GRADES and writers like the legendary R. Kelly, this is yet another masterpiece from the R&B songstress. The album also features duets with artists like Stacy Barthe, Tye Tribbett, and Aloe Blacc, who with Fantasia’s powerful vocals all add exactly what each track needs—the perfect blend.

Featuring singles “No Time For It” and “Sleeping With The One I Love”, the album delivers exactly what Fantasia has explained to us time and time again exactly what she wanted to deliver this time around: real music. Music for the soul. Speaking earlier this week with AOL Build, Fantasia spoke about how the album is a result of growing up around music, her love for all genres of music and never being placed into a single box as an artist.

A few standouts from the album:

“So Blue” – My personal favorite track from the album (which I previously reviewed), is the quintessential Fantasia record. Mellow, smooth R&B paired with lyrics that the listener is sure to connect to. This is the song that I feel sets the tone for the entire album.

“Sleeping With The One I Love” – This track is a nod to the classic R&B/Soul sound from artists like James Brown, Sam Cooke, and Curtis Mayfield and was written by singer/songwriter R. Kelly. “I’m sleeping with the one I love, ’cause the one I’m with is good to me, but just ain’t good enough,” sings Fantasia as she melts into the deep and passionate lyrics that only she can deliver.

“Stay Up” Featuring singer Stacy Barthe, this song is an anthem to motivation and positivity. With the unique sound and syncopation that is sure to grab all of your attention within the first 10 seconds of listening, it truly captures the essence of Fantasia, who has become known for inspiring her fans through song.

The-Definition-Of

“Wait For You” – If you are a fan of 80’s music and music that allows you to listen to and escape everything around you, then this is the record for you. During the verses, the song delivers a soft, serene feeling and then a jolt of energy once the chorus kicks in, it all balances out for a defining moment from this album.

“Lonely Legend” – If you know anything about Fantasia and her musical influences, then you have certainly heard her mention Tina Turner and Bonnie Rait before. This record is a nod to that soul/blues sound that both Tina and Bonnie have become known for. This is a huge stand out from the album. I particularly love the breakdown with the horns as it gave me thoughts of what the live performances will be like and we all know Fantasia is one of the most dynamic and energetic performers of our generation.

Overall, this album is a true step up from her previous release in 2013. Fantasia continues to grow and explore various genres and add her own special twist to them. This is one of the many reasons why we love Fantasia. She is fearless when it comes to giving her fans a variety of sounds and this album is a perfect example of that.
