VH1 Premiere’s Original Movie, “The Breaks”

Last night, VH1’s newest original movie, “The Breaks” – which stars actor / rapper Tristan “Mack” Wilds, Wood Harris, Afton Williamson and rapper Method Man. The movie was greatly anticipated by regular viewers of VH1 as well as those new, who simply wanted to reminisce about the early 1990’s when Hip-Hop was on the rise tuned in.

Judging from Twitter, the main worries of those who were there to witness Hip-Hop’s uprising in New York City at this time were that the movie would not hold true to the actual feeling, setting and most importantly, music. However, only 30 minutes into the movie, I’d say those worries were quickly put to rest.

With an original soundtrack/score created by the legendary DJ Premier and featuring a track by rapper Phonte (Ahm in the movie), it all sticks totally true to what Hip-Hop was during its rise. The entire team, including Wilds wanted to ensure everything was authentic and if you ask me, they accomplished it beautifully.

The movie follows an inspiring producer (Wilds), an industry insider (Williamson) and an inspiring radio DJ as they all work their way into the music industry through the struggles and set backs as well as their personal lives. Within minutes, the viewer is already attached to each of the characters, which plays a huge part in the want to see each of them succeed.

Viewers can’t seem to stop raving about how great it was via social media platforms like Twitter, where they have voiced their opinions.

According to the official VH1 Website, the movie does indeed have the potential to become a show and I feel this is the only option. Although the movie was great, the ending leaves the viewer with a longing to know more about each of the characters back stories and where they could potentially end up.

Would you tune in every week if the movie were given the green light for a series?
