Exclusive Interview: Pop Culturalist Chats with Stella Prince

Stella Prince

Stella Prince is an up-and-coming singer-songwriter who has caught everyone’s attention with her authenticity. She’s channeling her life experiences and emotions into her craft, and it’s striking a chord with listeners around the world. Pop Culturalist was lucky enough to speak with Stella about her career and her new single, “The Rain Might Fall.”

PC: How did you discover your passion for music?
Stella: I’ve been obsessed with music since I was around three, although I didn’t start studying seriously until I began classical training at the age of seven. I can’t remember a time when music wasn’t my entire world. It’s a passion I was born with.

My family always had music on, all genres all the time. I wrote my first song the day my dog died when I was ten back in 2014. I was so upset because my dog Scout was like a sibling. He’d been with us my whole life. So I put all my emotions into writing my first song, “Old Dog.” It was a huge life moment where I realized I could put my feelings into something creative. I knew then that that was what I wanted to do with my life.

PC: Where do you draw inspiration from for your songwriting?
Stella: My dream is to bring authenticity to mainstream music and to a new generation. I think the best music comes from a place of real emotion, and experiencing real emotion is something that everyone can understand especially in these difficult times. Real emotion about real experiences resonates with everyone. When I write, I try to find the truth in what I’m saying so that it can be relevant to everyone.

PC: What is your creative process like when you’re working on a song?
Stella: Each songwriting session is so different from the last that I never really know what to expect. Sometimes I’ll have an idea in mind before I sit down with my guitar, so once I find the chords I’ll literally write the song in half an hour. Other times I can’t quite put my finger on what I want to say so it’ll take me a few weeks to really finish the song.

PC: Tell us about “The Rain Might Fall” and the inspiration behind the song.
Stella: “The Rain Might Fall” paints a picture of what it’s like to wait for change. It can almost feel like a dream where time feels slow and then suddenly moves so quickly and everything is changed forever. The thunder is the energy that knows what’s going to happen next. The thunder represents the intuition that things are about to change with the coming storm. You have to trust that intuition—it’s all knowing.

PC: As we look ahead to the rest of 2021, what does the year hold for you?
Stella: I am so excited for the rest of 2021! I actually just got back from a trip to Nashville, the first time I’ve been there since pre-pandemic, and it was incredible to reconnect with my team and friends. It was great to have some exciting meetings and play at some writers’ rounds. There are lots of big things I’m looking forward to these next few months, and I have a whole bunch of live shows this summer. It feels great to perform for a live audience again!
