Exclusive Interview: Pop Culturalist Chats with Owen Myre About PG: Psycho Goreman

Owen Myre

From his early work in student films and commercials to landing lead roles in independent films including They Don’t Know and Alternate Ground, Owen Myre’s career is skyrocketing. He can currently be seen starring in his breakout role as Luke in PG: Psycho Goreman. We caught up with rising talent to learn all about PG: Psycho Goreman.

PC: Tell us about PG: Psycho Goreman and your character in the film.
Owen: The film is about a brother and sister who find this gem that can control this terrifying monster named PG. I play Luke. He’s quiet and reserved and normally lets his sister walk all over him. That was hard to relate to because I’m not that kind of person, but he was an interesting character, to say the least. As he starts to see more monsters, he comes into his own.

PC: What was it about this script that stood out to you?
Owen: When I first saw it, I thought it was really interesting. PG was so cool. I also have never been in a campy horror film, but I love these types of films. I’ve also never played a brother-sister relationship in a film, which was also really exciting to do.

PC: Director-writer Steven Kostanski has said in previous interviews that the film doesn’t work without the right actors playing Luke and Mimi. What was it like collaborating with Nita-Josee [Hanna] as you built that dynamic?
Owen: It was great. Nita is amazing. She’s so much like Mimi. We were just like our characters off set when we were filming. I couldn’t have asked for a better partner in crime for this film.

PC: You talked about this a little already, but how similar/different are you to Luke? How did you prepare to step into his shoes?
Owen: I’m very different from Luke. I wouldn’t personally let everything get to me as it does for Luke. He really lets Mimi walk all over him. I would never let my sister do that. To prepare, I just pretended I was afraid of everything. That helped a lot because Luke has this trembling voice throughout the film.

PC: When you are playing a character who’s so different from who you are, is that easier or more difficult for you as an actor?
Owen: I would say it’s easier. When you’re acting, you don’t want to be yourself, at least for me. Being so different from my character helps that.

PC: Steven has said that the concept behind the film is that he’s always wondered what he would do if he had his own monster. If you had your own monster, what would you do?
Owen: If I could have my own monster, I would use it for good. I feel like I would show off my monster like how Mimi does in the film. They would do backflips, shoot lasers, and other cool stuff. I definitely would use it to do good in the world.

PC: This is a breakout role for you. Did anything surprise you about the experience and what was the biggest takeaway?
Owen: The most surprising thing was how fast everything was. I’ve never been on such a big set before. Everyone was moving so quickly and on top of their toes. I’ve never done anything like this before. It’s always been relaxing, but when time is money, you have to move. That can be overwhelming. I will say the biggest takeaway is that it’s amazing what you can do as a group when you work together.

PC: Is there a particular scene or moment that you’re really excited for your fans to see?
Owen: There’s a particular scene where Luke has a nightmare and he sees PG. He stares PG down, and it felt so cool in the moment, and it felt even cooler watching it. You get to see Luke face his fears.

PC: With this film coming out now, what do you hope audiences take away?
Owen: I hope audiences, if they have a brother and sister, take away that you should never take that relationship for granted. You have to stick by them.

PC: Besides PG: Psycho Goreman, what’s next for you?
Owen: I have a film called Alternate Ground coming out. It’s an alien horror film, which I’m really excited for. I’m the lead, and I think it’s coming out this year. It got delayed because of COVID, but it’s a great film.
