Exclusive Interview: Pop Culturalist Chats with Charlene Laurent

Charlene Laurent is a multitalented creative who hopes to inspire others through her craft, whether that be on the runway, screen, or stage. Soon she’ll launch the next chapter in her already impressive career, telling stories through comedy. Pop Culturalist caught up with this triple threat to learn more about her exciting debut as a comedian, and she shared her best piece of advice to aspiring artists.

PC: You’re an actress, comedian, and model. How did you discover your passion for the arts?
Charlene: I grew up loving books and writing. All I would do all day is read, and it sparked the passion for art in me. I always knew I wanted to inspire others and tell stories through acting. Modeling was a great step to get into the industry, and it lets me tell stories through a picture, but acting has always been my biggest passion.

PC: Your mom wanted to pursue a career in modeling, but her family didn’t allow her to. What has it meant to have her support?
Charlene: My mom always wanted to model, and her family didn’t allow it back in the day. It ended her dreams and ruined it for her. That’s why she always taught me and my brother to have a purpose in life—to bring meaning to this world and inspire others. All three of us have different talents in different kinds of arts, but one thing we have in common is that we all want to inspire others. A lot of families don’t respect artists and their art, and that’s anywhere in this world. It’s important to accept artists for who they are and how they choose to express their art form. It might be different, but it’s inspiring, and that’s what always stuck with me. I am grateful to have someone like my mom, who accepts me for who I am and supports me every step of the way.

PC: What advice would you give to any aspiring artists?
Charlene: Before you do anything or start, start researching and studying what you want to do. Be patient and don’t give up because things are taking a little longer than you expected. It’s important to go the right way. Be independent and don’t fall for false promises. It’s important to honor your own art and respect yourself. This means waiting for your opportunity to shine. You can do anything you want and reach all of your dreams but only if you believe in yourself and trust your own timing. While working on projects, reach out to more experienced artists and individuals in this industry and ask if you can learn from them. The entertainment industry is way more supportive than people think it is. Don’t be scared to ask questions. That’s how you grow. Surround yourself with people who are doing what you want to do, and learn from them.

PC: You’ve had a lot of success already in your career. When you look back, is there a particular moment that stands out?
Charlene: There are definitely a few. One of them was BeautyCon 2019, which was an amazing way to connect with creatives in this industry and gave me the opportunity to meet some of my fans.

Another moment was when I became one of the Top 15 Maxim Cover Girls in 2019. LA Fashion Week was an amazing way to network again and see amazing fashion. It certainly stood out to me because some famous artists came up to me and knew who I was, which is such an honor and was super unexpected. People I looked up to knew me and liked my work. I feel honored and am grateful for all these experiences because they made me grow as an artist and individual.

PC: What’s one thing you know now that you wish you knew when you started your career?
Charlene: A few things I’d tell artists who are just starting out. You have to research and do your own work. You have to be an expert in your field before you go on set. Ask experienced artists and people from this industry questions, and don’t be scared to learn. I don’t know everything, and I always ask questions because I want to learn and grow. Be patient because things take time. You have to believe in yourself. Don’t give up because things are taking a little longer than you expected. Consistency is key in this industry. Your moment to shine will come.

PC: You’re launching your comedy career this fall. How do you think your experience as an actress and model will prepare you for this next chapter?
Charlene: I think acting and modeling have shaped me into the artist I am today. Comedy is such a great way to bring joy into this world. The world is in such bad shape right now, which is why I think it’s a gift to let people escape from their problems, even if it’s just for a minute. Going into comedy as a model will put me in the spotlight, and I know that, but I can take it. I’m excited to grow as a comedian and perform my set for the audience.
