Exclusive Interview: LZ7 Talks New Single “Energy” and Their Forthcoming Album

LZ7 is a rising EDM group that is quickly taking the industry by storm. Their uplifting anthems are bringing comfort in the darkest of times and remind listeners of the power of hope and love.

Following the success of their 2021 hit “Back in Time,” the band has returned with their highly-anticipated single, “Energy.”

Pop Culturalist was lucky enough to speak with lead Linz West about “Energy” and their forthcoming album.

PC: How did you all discover your passion for music?
Lindz: I absolutely love music and the effect it has to uplift my soul! It’s been a passion since getting my first set of 1210 decks in my mate’s bedroom with some old-school army camouflage netting as our stage set, turning up any kind of big-drop house and garage! That’s where it all started, so when I get up in front of people I try to take myself back to those moments and remember how fun it was and hope that other people experience that through the music we create now! Our first show was in a young offenders institute with some of the toughest, hardest-to-reach young people, and I was petrified. We set the system up, and within 30 seconds these 400 lads were up raving, smiling, breakdancing, and throwing shapes. I asked them what happened, and they said, “The music…the hope we could hear in the music. We are locked up for twenty-three hours of the day, and you had us for an hour and turned us into thirteen-year-old kids again.” Hope in music…that’s what it’s all about for us!

PC: Who or what has had the biggest influence on your careers?
Lindz: We listen to everything from Coldplay and Chainsmokers right through to Jay-Z and the big rap names too. We love a bit of homegrown UK grime thrown in, so we are pretty eclectic in what we listen to.

PC: You’ve all been incredibly vulnerable in your craft. Has that always come easy to you?
Lindz: Yeah, I think music has a great way of showing an artist’s authenticity, really. Something that has authentically moved us is watching our audience being moved by our music. It inspires us to keep producing positive, uplifting chart anthems and relating on every level to the ups and downs of our own personal life journeys. If that helps one young person turn their back on giving up on life, then it’s all worth it!

PC: You’ve got a new single out now. Tell us about “Energy” and the inspiration behind the song.
Lindz: Our set is pretty high-octane from the start. We use a lot of big DJs, like Charlie Hedges (Dance Anthems on Radio 1), to remix our stuff so it pops off on a live set! “Energy” feels like an extension of that! The energy in the room connecting each of us as we carry hope, joy, and a love for life through our set and through this song!

PC: This single will lead to your forthcoming album. Is there anything you can tell us about this next body of work?
Lindz: Steve Jobs was once quoted saying, “Those who are crazy enough to think they can change the world probably will,” and I love the idea of being in the world and not of it, so we called our new album Human. It’s a body of work that encompasses every aspect of the best bits of being human. The way we have the ability to love, care, and carry hope and light in an often dark world. Each song has been crafted around our own personal faith journey and how that has inspired us to really squeeze the juice out of life and want others to experience that too. During the pandemic, we were sharing the word “hope” often and in sign language “hope” is a fist that is clenched out of the bottom of your stomach and pushed forward. Hope is being sure that something good is gonna happen. Couple “hope” with the word “faith” and create another fist. Faith is being sure of what you hope for and certain of what you do not see. Suddenly you have two fists, ready to fight everything the world is gonna throw at you…a double combo if you will. Our album has been built around the idea that young people can be game changers by coupling these two words.

PC: If you had to select a song off of the album that best encompasses who you are as a band, which would it be and why?
Lindz: I would actually have to say that “Energy” sums us up big time! It’s not necessarily the lead song, but it’s definitely one that encompasses our sound, the drop, and the meaning of what we do as artists and why we do it…
