Book Review: Our Violent Ends by Chloe Gong

Our Violent Ends

Warning: This review contains spoilers for These Violent Delights!

Ever since I read Chloe Gong’s These Violent Delights, I’ve been eagerly waiting for the release of Our Violent Ends. It did not disappoint.

The story is a retelling of Romeo & Juliet and starts off right when Marshall was killed. Juliette knows that if she makes one wrong move, her cousin will step in and lead the Scarlett Gang. She had to sacrifice her relationship with Roma in order to protect him from the blood feud. Meanwhile, Roma is hell-bent on making amends even if it means killing the girl that he loves and loathes equally.

Unfortunately for them, they need to set their grudges aside and work together to stop the Nationalists. As they prepare for war, they discover that their biggest obstacle may be protecting their hearts from each other.

Highlights

  • The political elements and Kathleen’s arc. Kathleen has to e a spy for the Communists and it was great to read more about her journey.
  • The unexpected pairing of Benedikt and Marshall. I didn’t see that coming and I loved reading about them. The mutual pining and angst were perfect.
  • Roma and Juliette’s chemistry was undeniable. The tension in this book was even more intense than in the last one!
  • The feud between the Scarlett Gang and the White Flowers! This was so compelling and it was interesting to see how they tie to their political parties.
  • A heart-stopping conclusion! This book is one you don’t want to miss. Don’t skip the epilogue scene.

Lowlights

  • I would have loved to see more of Benedikt and Marshall’s story. Other than that, there are no lowlights for this book.

Final Thoughts: If you like darker retelling, this is a must-read. There are so many twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end. Our Violent Ends is a violent ending (pun intended), but I enjoyed every minute of it. Grab some tissues before you read this one—you’re going to need it!

Thank you to Simon & Schuester and NetGalley for an ARC of this book. As always, all opinions are my own.
