Album Review: Jacob Whitesides’ Why?

Jacob Whitesides

At the ripe old age of eighteen, Jacob Whitesides is already turning heads. He got his start by posting covers on YouTube. And, quickly amassed a huge following. While he could have signed with any major record label, it was important to him that he pave his own way. So, he created Double U Records. And, it paid off. Two of his EPs, A Piece of Me and Faces on Film, reached #1 on iTunes’ Singer-Songwriter Charts. This week, he released his debut album: Why?. It’s a well-constructed pop collection with hints of jazz and R&B influences. But, more importantly, it’s an artist coming into their own.

On Why?, Whitesides explores the many facets of love. He shows he has a knack for creating emotionally poignant lyrics which is evident on tracks like “Love Slow” and “You Told Me So.” But, he’s also got a fun side. And, guess what, he’s not afraid to show it. You probably won’t be able to get head-bopping classics like “Lovesick” and “Focus” out of your head. But, who’s complaining? I know I’m not. And, through it all, each track is supported by Whitesides’ soulful and gritty vocals.

Essential Listening: “Love Slow,” “Focus,” “You Told Me So,” “Open Book,” and “Levitate.”
