Tribeca Film Festival 2021: 11 Films to See

2021 marks a special occasion for New York City’s famed Tribeca Film Festival: it’s 20th anniversary. If that weren’t reason enough to celebrate, this year is also a joyous return to in-person events after a hard year of fighting the pandemic. The Festival takes place from June 9 through June 20. And, if you can’t be in New York City (or feel more comfortable staying home), Tribeca programming will also be available virtually!

Now, check out the films you should see:

In the Heights

It almost goes without saying that In the Heights is the must-see of TFF as it is the opening night film. In fact, there will be screenings of this movie adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Broadway production across all five boroughs on June 9.

 

India Sweets and Spices

On summer break, Indian American UCLA college student Alia returns home to New Jersey. This coming-of-age movie from writer-director Geeta Malik tackles identity and coming in to your own with charm and humor.

 

Catch the Fair One

Real life US boxing world champion Kali Reis stars in this thriller (exec produced by Darren Aronofsky) about a Native American woman who goes in search of her missing sister.

 

No Man of God

This is a fascinating portrait of Ted Bundy through the interviews he had with FBI analyst Bill Hagmaier (played by Elijah Wood).

 

Monsters at Work

A pin-off from Monsters Inc., this adorable animated film will entertain viewers of all ages.

 

12 Mighty Orphans

This heartwarming film is based on the true story of the Mighty Mites, a football team from a Fort Worth orphanage during the Depression.

 

No Longer Suitable for Use

If you loved Ramy and its fabulous cast like we did, you’ll be glad to see Laith Nakli star in this film. Writer-director Julian Joslin based this film about a Syrian-Egyptian immigrant who is living in Brooklyn and is an FBI informant on his past work for public defenders.

 

Lorelei

Returning home after fifteen years in prison, Wayland (Pablo Schreiber) reconnects with his high school girlfriend Dolores (Jena Malone) who is now a single mom. Written and directed by Sabrina Doyle.

 

False Positive

This twisted thriller about a couple struggling with fertility was written by John Lee (who also directs it) and Ilana Glazer (who also stars in it)–who both worked on the beloved comedy series Broad City.

 

Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain

This documentary diving into the life of Anthony Bourdain celebrates his life.

 

Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go For It

A must-see biopic documentary of Hollywood legend Rita Moreno.
