SDCC 2026: ‘Matchbox The Movie’ Revs Up a Globetrotting Adventure Fueled by Nostalgia, Action, and Comedy

Apple Original Films took over Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 with the debut of the first-look trailer for Matchbox The Movie, as stars John Cena, Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris, and Arturo Castro introduced director Sam Hargrave’s globe-trotting action-comedy based on the iconic Mattel toy line.

Based on the beloved die-cast cars, Matchbox The Movie follows a group of lifelong friends whose ordinary lives are turned upside down when undercover CIA agent Sean (John Cena) unexpectedly returns home. As one mission spirals into another, they’re thrust into an international adventure that pushes them far beyond the comfort of their small town. The first footage showcased inventive practical stunts, large-scale action, and plenty of laughs while never losing sight of the camaraderie at the story’s center.

John Cena described Matchbox The Movie as “a global thriller ride” about a group of lifelong friends leaning into nostalgia after anxiety has left them in an uncomfortable place. Revisiting those childhood connections, he explained, becomes what ultimately pushes them forward.

For Jessica Biel, the film was a full-circle experience. Having grown up playing Matchbox cars with her brothers, getting behind the wheel of the film’s vehicles and learning the stunt work made her feel like a kid again. “I grew up playing Matchbox cars with my brothers,” Biel shared. “To be able to drive these vehicles in real life, the Mustang that I got to drive is unbelievable. Learning the stunts and skills that we got to learn, you’re a kid again. It’s the magic of making movies. It revitalized my feelings about the movie industry.”

Biel also introduced Aimee, an EMT who moonlights as a race car driver. She teased a special relationship between Aimee and Sean while describing her as someone who always wants to bring the group together.

Arturo Castro praised Hargrave and his stunt team, saying some of the practical action in the film features “some of the craziest things I’ve seen a human perform.” Growing up in Guatemala, Castro said productions like this were something he used to dream about, making the opportunity to join Matchbox The Movie particularly special.

Castro described Ted as a chemistry teacher whose greatest strength isn’t his ability to fight, but the love he has for the people around him. Through Ted, he said, audiences will see just how resilient ordinary people can become when those they care about are on the line.

Teyonah Parris described Charmaine as someone who loves both Crosby and her friends but wants more for herself and dreams of seeing the world. Sam Richardson’s Crosby, meanwhile, is a construction worker and proud homebody who’s happiest staying close to home until he’s suddenly pulled far outside his comfort zone. Together, their characters represent two very different perspectives on what it means to leave home behind.

More than anything, the Hall H presentation made it clear that Matchbox The Movie is embracing the playful spirit that has made the tiny die-cast cars a favorite for generations. The Apple Original Film premieres globally on Apple TV+ on October 9, 2026.
