Top 5 Weirdest and Funniest Oscars Moments

Who doesn’t love watching the Oscars? The glitz, the glam, the gowns… but there are a million other blogs covering those exact things. We here at the Pop Culturalist want to show you a whole new view of the Oscars: the weird view. Was it just me or was this year’s Oscars full of strange (and poorly produced) moments? Let’s take a moment to celebrate each and every one of them.

1. Patricia Arquette is… dead?

Anyone else notice that Patricia Arquette sounded half-dead as she was reading the nominees for Best Supporting Actor? She sounded as enthusiastic as I was about watching the Oscars at that point (I WAS SO TIRED IT WENT SO LATE). In monotone: “Christian Bale… for The Big Short. Is this what it feels like to be a zombie also why are they making me read off for best supporting actor when each of them have been paid 22% more than me arghxkdllslsls.”

2. The applauding bear

Okay, I had a legit giggle at this visual gag of the bear clapping during a mention of The Revenant.

3. An Oscar crew member’s hot second of fame

During the thank you speech given by the Ex Machina visual effects team, a crew member was caught on camera lovingly gathering up cable. This was not the first time during this year’s Oscars coverage that crew members had their 15 seconds of fame, nor would it be the last. But I certainly remembered it as being one of the most jarring. You go, Glen Coco. You go.

4. Kevin Hart

There’s a reason why this guy is a millionaire. He knows how to be funny. I laughed out loud at his joke about still not getting to the front row of the Oscars.

“I only came tonight because I thought for sure that I would get a seat in the front row and it didn’t happen. I don’t know. I thought this was the year to show my face more in the front row, because of all the black stuff that was going on, so I was like they’ll go to me. But they didn’t. But whatever. It’s okay. I have a suit with shiny stuff on it so I still made a statement.”

5. Smug Tobey Maguire

As Chris Rock dove into his Girl Scouts cookie-selling pitch, I couldn’t tear my eyes away from Tobey Maguire’s smug little face in the background. What was he doing there and why did he keep giving knowing smirks to the camera? DOES HIS SPIDEY SENSE TELL HIM SOMETHING WE DON’T KNOW?
