Why You Should Be Watching This is Us

If you haven’t watched the first two episodes of NBC’s newest emotional family drama, This is Us, what are you waiting for? This is Us has the promise of filling the void that NBC’s older family drama, Parenthood, left when the series ended (side note: watch that show immediately. It is amazing.). Not only does This is Us delve into complicated relationships of all kinds, it also has a bit of romance, heartbreak, and a few good unexpected twists. Here are just a few more reasons why this show is one you should be watching. (Don’t worry, there are not any spoilers below!)

The unique concept. This is Us revolves around people who all share the same birthday. Not only do they share the same birthday, but we meet them as they are all turning thirty-six.

The cast of characters (and the actors portraying them). Obviously, any show that has a wide-range of character types will appeal to a wider audience. It’s refreshing to see that in This is Us. Each character represents something: a parent, a sibling, or a lover. Each one has doubts about themselves. The main cast is full of wonderful talent: Milo Ventimiligia (Jack), Mandy Moore (Rebecca), Justin Hartley (Kevin), Chrissy Metz (Kate), and Sterling K. Brown (Randall). It’s basically a round-up of old favorites (we love Milo, were huge fans of Justin on the daytime soap, Passions, and Mandy is the friend we wish we had) and soon-to-be-new favorites.

The struggles are relatable. Kate struggles with her weight. Randall struggles with perfection. Kevin struggles with what people think of him. Rebecca struggles to be the best mother she can be. Kevin struggles to be…well, I don’t want to ruin anything for you. Just know that ALL of the characters are trying to find self-acceptance, whether they know it or not. And that’s something anyone can relate to.

The surprises are gasp-inducing. Again, no spoilers, but just…wow. Both of the episodes that have aired had me like:

So, what are you waiting for? Tune into NBC on Tuesday nights at 9/8C and get hooked on This is Us.
