NYCC 2016: A Conversation With the Teen Wolf Cast

I had the pleasure of sitting down and chatting with some of the stars of Teen Wolf at this year’s New York Comic Con. We discussed everything from details of the final season of the show to Tyler Posey’s future beyond this addictive series. This very candid and appreciative cast had a lot to say so let’s go ahead and get right into it.

I kicked off my series of interviews with the teen wolf himself Tyler Posey, and he was very eager to discuss the final bow of his beloved show.

Tyler Posey

The first half of the final season sees Scott McCall desiring a college experience and setting his sights on UC Davis, a college Tyler jokingly says he could never get into. Tyler also reflected on Scott’s journey, everything from tensions between him and his dad to the death of his beloved girlfriend Allison Argent, and has agreed that Scott has been through “a sh*t ton”. While Tyler can’t say too much about what’s to come on the series, he did say this upcoming season is all about “remembrance”. With Stiles Stilinski having gone missing and the memory of him wiped from everyone’s minds, there’s a different dynamic among the pack. Tyler teased we will see a different side to Scott’s relationship with both Malia Tate and Liam Dunbar, thanks to Stiles’ disappearance, and that they all feel “like something is missing”.

We would be remiss if we didn’t discuss the success of the show and the longevity it’s had, and Tyler said he always knew Teen Wolf had the potential to make it to 100 episodes. To quote Tyler, “I called it. I was like dude we’re gonna be doing this sh*t forever” when discussing the show’s inevitable popularity with Dylan O’Brien. While the talent among the cast doesn’t go unnoticed, Tyler believes a large part of Teen Wolf‘s success is due to the fact that it’s “dark, edgy, funny, and sexy”.

We wrapped up his interview by discussing Tyler’s future beyond Teen Wolf and Scott McCall. He told me it’s “very promising” and that he has quite a few projects in the works. Most of his fans are very familiar with his popular podcast Doin’ It Raw and he was very excited to share that it’s been officially picked up by a network. Tyler also mentioned he has a short film coming out he directed and will dive deeper into producing, as well as teased a “very big secret” he can’t disclose as of yet.

Next up was the mastermind behind this fan-favorite series, Jeff Davis. Unlike Tyler, Jeff never could have dreamed Teen Wolf would make it to 100 episodes, but is truly thankful. It excites him that so many people have responded to the show in a positive way and have formed lasting friendships. To quote Jeff, “It’s gratifying to me that people have met some of their best friends because of the show.” He also noted how much he enjoyed the Teen Wolf art exhibit last year in New York City that showcased some of the wonderfully talented artists who are fans of the show.

While Jeff is uncertain how exactly the final season will play out, he’s almost certain he knows how the series will end. He has an idea for the final scene of the series and says it “feels like a fitting end to the show”. Jeff also said he’s hard at work trying to get one or two more actors back on the show that “we haven’t seen in awhile.”

When asked how he handled this upcoming season with Dylan O’Brien’s busy schedule outside of Teen Wolf, and subsequently Stiles’ absence, Jeff said it wasn’t easy but he’s a big believer in allowing actors to “flex their creative muscles”. He acquaints that allowing the actors to pursue other endeavors “makes them better on the show” should they return.

While it will be difficult to say goodbye to Teen Wolf, both Tyler and Jeff are open to revisiting it in the form of a made-for-television movie. Apparently all things are possible thanks to how hugely successful this series has been. Jeff did say though that once the series officially wraps, he hopes that fans of the show will takeaway the running theme of friendship and the importance of loyalty. To quote Jeff, “I wrote characters I wanted to be friends with.”

Holland Roden

I ended my series of interviews with Lydia Martin herself, Holland Roden. She immediately talked about the impact Teen Wolf has had on her and calls it a “huge chapter in my life”. Both her and Tyler mentioned that the series gave them “the college experience” and has been a support system for them both.

As far as her character Lydia, Holland hopes the fans have seen Lydia’s evolution throughout the series and the growth of her friendship between both Scott and Stiles. She believes the catalyst to Lydia’s growth is and always will be Allison, and that was one of the most important in Lydia’s life. Speaking of important people in Lydia’s life, we will see more of her interactions with her mother, Mrs. Martin, this upcoming season.

While Holland will greatly miss the show, she knows she will continue to see her castmates, both current and former. She mentions her friendships with Max and Charlie Carver, as well as her friendship with Crystal Reed. She also noted that she’s working on three scripts, two are almost done and ready to pitch, and has a beauty device in the works with her makeup artist. Like Tyler, she equally wants to get involved in producing.

Although it was a short interview, Shelley Hennig said she’s excited for fans to see how Malia responds to Stiles’ absence.

Even though the time has come to bid farewell to Teen Wolf, it’s clear we haven’t seen the last of this talented cast! May the final season see these beloved characters receive their much deserved happy endings, although when it comes to Teen Wolf happiness is a fleeting thing. Guess we’ll all have to tune in to see what happens to our favorite residents of Beacon Hills!
