MegaCon 2018: A Conversation with Daredevil’s Charlie Cox

This Memorial Day weekend, the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen left the Big Apple and made his way to the Sunshine State. He was greeted by a packed house at the Orlando Convention Center, home to this year’s MegaCon. Fresh off of filming season three of the hit Netflix series, Charlie Cox charmed audiences with his humor and gave us the inside scoop on all things Daredevil. Check out the highlights below:

On Finding Himself in Matt Murdock
“It’s important to recognize what you get for free in a character. Sometimes there’s a temptation to focus on all the ways that you’re different because you’re playing a character. But it’s important to realize why the director or the producers have chosen you. There’s something in your spirit that [is] similar to the character that they’re casting, and it’s important to recognize that. It’s also important to focus on what you don’t have. One of the things that a good friend of mine pointed out is that as Charlie I smile too much and that Matt Murdock wouldn’t do that. It’s surprisingly difficult not to do if you’re a person who smiles a lot because you just feel rude all the time. [laughs] It’s one of the things I had to work on with this character.”

Will We See Matt Murdock on the Big Screen?
“Everyone in this room can write a letter to the head of Marvel Studios and then maybe…”

What Other Superhero Would He like to Play?
“Spiderman would be really fun, but I’m way too old. I know they’re not actually swinging between walls [on screen], but how cool would that be?”

His Favorite Person to Work With
“The Punisher/Daredevil relationship and dynamic is particularly fun. Before we even knew The Punisher was going to be on the show, we were playing a Matt Murdock who was very similar to Frank Castle. Steven DeKnight, the showrunner, and I would talk about how Matt Murdock was one bad day from becoming Frank Castle. And Jon’s the best, and his show is just fantastic.”

The Best is Yet to Come
“We may have something coming up in the next season that might make those two [corridor scene in season one & stairway scene in season two] look really lame.”

What Prop Charlie Kept from Set
“It’s a funny story. I’m affiliated with the American Foundation for the Blind, and I went to their fundraising celebration. They asked me if I could donate anything so I asked my bosses, and they gave me a pair of the red glasses from season one. I showed up at the gala. I saw all the items: a holiday here, a car, and the Daredevil glasses which I had framed and signed. Dinner was at 9 pm, and the auction ended at 9:30 pm. People would write down their highest bid. I went to the toilet at 9:15 pm, and I went to have a look to see what the bid was. The bid was $200. I was like $200 bucks?! So I put down $500 bucks and at the end of the dinner, I won my glasses. I had to go and pay for them and the woman was like we’ll contact the guy who donated them and make sure they get to you. I was like, ‘There’s no need; I donated them!'”
