Exclusive Interview: Pop Culturalist Chats with Young Sheldon’s Wyatt McClure

Wyatt McClure is one of the stars of Chuck Lorre’s smash comedy Young Sheldon. The rising talent has garnered wide acclaim for his transformative performance as Billy Sparks. Pop Culturalist caught up with Wyatt in between filming to chat about his role and the series.

Career

PC: How did you discover your passion for acting?
Wyatt: I always watched funny cartoons and thought it would be fun to be a voice actor. I love to make people laugh. As soon as I got in front of the camera, I knew that’s where I was meant to be!

PC: As you look ahead in your career, what are some of the goals you hope to accomplish?
Wyatt: I would love to win an Oscar. I go down to the Oscars every year when they are setting up and take pictures. One year, I will be taking a picture with my own!

PC: Who or what has had the biggest influence on your career?
Wyatt: My acting coach Geoffrey Kennedy. He is always helping me and pushing me to be my best. I wouldn’t be where I am today without him.

PC: How challenging is it to balance your career and life as a normal kid?
Wyatt: I think that it’s pretty easy. Instead of going to a regular school, I go to work and have school on-set. Afterward, I am a normal kid who plays with my friends!

Young Sheldon

PC: Young Sheldon is your breakout television role. Has anything surprised you about the experience or Billy’s arc in the series?
Wyatt: It is an honor to work on Young Sheldon. Everyone is so friendly and nice. I may not be in every episode, but they treat me like family. They have supported my stand-up career and shown up to cheer me on.

PC: What’s been the biggest takeaway having joined the cast in 2017?
Wyatt: I was supposed to be a bully, however, I think they saw me and changed my character to a silly, fun kid.

PC: What can you tease about Billy’s storyline moving forward?
Wyatt: They don’t give us much in advance but you may see how Billy plays baseball! [laughs]

Pop Culturalist Speed Round

PC: Guilty pleasure TV show?
Wyatt: America’s Funniest Home Videos

PC: Guilty pleasure movie?
