‘Chicago P.D.’: Believing In Burgess

It goes without saying that this week’s episode of Chicago P.D. titled ‘Justice’, was one of the most intense hours of the series. Not only was it one of the most complex and involved storylines we’ve seen, it served as a backdoor pilot for the potential series Chicago Justice.

The episode centered around Officer Burgess who shot a young African-American man, Michael Ellis, in the back multiple times believing he was responsible for shooting and severally injuring her partner, Officer Roman. Difficulties arose when no gun was found at the scene, Ellis claimed Burgess shot the wrong man and the whole city wanted to believe Ellis was innocent for fear of backlash. This was not their usual open and shut case.

Assistant State Attorney Peter Stone steps in to defend Burgess in court and ultimately gets a confession out of Ellis, who admits he shot Roman out of anger that his uncle committed suicide in prison due to being wrongfully imprisoned by a racist cop. It was simply an act of revenge and Roman and Burgess happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time wearing Chicago blue.

Chicago P.D. has been fearless when tackling difficult subject matters and for that I applaud them. The show continues to stay relevant on currently happenings in the world and offer perspective without being too biased.

While every cast member brought their A-game, the clear winner of this episode was Marina Squerciati who perfectly portrayed the mixed bag of emotions Officer Burgess was feeling. Squerciati never fails to impress, but this might have been her best hour yet! Looking forward to what’s in store for our favorite Chicago police department as we move into the final hours of the season. I can guarantee you won’t want to miss a single minute!
