Book Review: Heartbreak for Hire by Sonia Hartl

Heartbreak for Hire by Sonia Hartl follows the main protagonist, Brinkley, who has had to keep her job covet for approximately two years. After a traumatic heartbreak that ended her previous relationship, Brinkley starts working as a professional heartbreaker. As a part of her job, people pay her to take revenge on men who have wronged them. Unfortunately for Brinkley, her boss makes the choice to hire male heartbreakers. Her new coworker ends up being a previous target and things get complicated. Even though Brinkley finds herself drawn to her new coworker, she knows that people aren’t always who they seem to be.

Highlights

  • I was instantly hooked from the beginning! Right from the start, the reader is introduced to Brinkley when she’s in the middle of her assignment.
  • I adored the other subplots and the main plots. Usually, I’m only invested in the main plot, but this book was easy to finish.
  • It took me a while to appreciate Mark’s character.
  • It was cute to see how Mark became a better person because of Brinkley.
  • Brinkley’s personality was a lot of fun to read about.
  • I predicted the plot twist, but I like how it turned out.

Lowlights

  • I would have liked to see her interact with her dad more towards the end.
  • Brinkley’s mother, up until the very end, irritated me. By the end, she wasn’t completely awful.
  • This isn’t exactly a lowlight, but I think it would have been highly entertaining if the book had a dual POV and the second one was from Mark’s perspective.

Final thoughts: I would have loved to see an epilogue with a glimpse into their future. It would have been cute to see where they end up and how different their lives are from where the story ended. This was hilarious, emotional, and an overall fun book to read over the summer! This is the perfect book to take on a road trip or to the beach (or just to read at home). Although I have never gone through what any of the characters went through, I felt connected to them.
