Best Moments from Season 3 of The Magicians

The Magicians Season 3 Margo Elliot

Let’s be real. When looking back over season 3 of The Magicians to pick out the best scenes, everything was all about Margo. Margo went from one of our favorite characters with fierce, snappy one-liners to full-on regal, badass HIGH KING! Her scene becoming Queen of Fillory was magnificent. But, there’s more to The Magicians than Margo, and it’s such a fantastic show so here are five other moments from season 3 that really stuck out:

Episode 1: Eliot and Margo’s discovery of her spying eye. Ok, ok. So this is clearly a Margo moment, but this is one of the most brilliant uses of pop culture references on a TV show. This also is another example of why Eliot and Margo (and, in turn, actors Hale Appleman and Summer Bishil) are perfect together.

Episode 5: Elliot and Quentin build a mosaic in Fillory to find a key. Eliot and Q (Jason Ralph) travel back to Fillory to build a puzzle-like mosaic; they must build it to show “the beauty of all life,” and then the key will appear. They spend decades trying to break the puzzle. In that time, they grow old together and create their own little family (Q even has a son). Then Eliot dies, and Q buries him. In burying him, he finds the last piece of mosaic they had needed all along. It was such a surprisingly moving and beautiful storyline.

Episode 8: The Head Librarian is Harriet’s mother! I love a good twist/hidden connection in a plot, and this one was unexpected. Not only was it a well-done flashback (all silent) of Harriet’s (Marlee Matlin) life, piecing together why she left Brakebills. her relationship with her mom (the Librarian played by Mageina Tovah), and how she knows so much about the library, but it was also setting up the larger battle to come between the Library and those who want magic to be free for all.

Episode 10: Julia and Fen free the fairies. We’ve hated the fairies since that creepy Queen took over Fillory, but no one deserves to be enslaved and ground up into a dust that magicians snort to enhance their magic. Plus, gross. It was also cool to see Fen (Brittany Curran) have a moment where she became an assured, strong woman after all she’s had to endure and work with a character she never really has before (Stella Maeve playing Julia). (Warning: the clip has some violence)

Episode 11: Timeline 23’s Penny. Since our Penny is stuck serving the Library (and, uh, what was that Hades meeting he had?! We can’t wait to see how that plays out), the gang went to timeline 23 where the Beast still lives (surprise, it’s Q!)…and so do many other characters (Marina, for one), including a version of Alice (Olivia Taylor Dudley) and Penny (Arjun Gupta). Except this Penny is in love with Julia! That was a delightful little twist that is sure to make next season pretty interesting when Kady (Jade Tailor) gets thrown into the mix.
