Shadowhunters: New Trailer and New Series Regular

Our lovely Shadowhunters cast attended San Diego Comic-Con this past Thursday and they came bearing gifts! Not only did they provide little teasers throughout various interviews—including ours which will be up soon—they treated us all to a never before seen trailer at their first SDCC panel. The new trailer was packed full of fight sequences, emotional character moments, and even flying demons! Fair to say there’s quite a bit to discuss so let’s get right to it.

Last week’s episode was a perfect setup for things to come. After discussing Valentine’s journals detailing the experiments he did on both Jace and Jonathan, Clary came to the realization that her brother was still alive—and also further confirmation that Jace isn’t her brother. Meanwhile, Alec learned from his father that the Clave is keeping secrets—specifically that they do not have the soul sword or know its whereabouts. Segway into Valentine and Jonathan hashing out loads of family drama, and not in the healthy way. It seems things are about to take a turn for the worst —and no one is safe.

The new trailer debuted footage from the last four episodes of the season and we are nervously excited for what’s to come. Through quick glimpses, we see Jonathan doing his best to make Jace’s life a living hell—as if Jace hasn’t been through enough already. Chained up and beaten to a pulp, things are looking pretty grim for one of our favorite Shadowhunters for the foreseeable future. One of the brighter moments in the trailer was a tender kiss shared between Simon and Maia, a relationship we fully support as long as Maia doesn’t play second fiddle to Clary. These two are undoubtedly cute together and have loads of chemistry—maybe not quite as much as Jace and Maia but we digress—and Simon just needs to be in the right headspace before he pursues Maia.

We also got to see Magnus and Alec fighting side by side against a flying demon of all things! We’ve come a long way since Season 1 and the special effects in the latter half of the season have been INCREDIBLE. We are absolutely here for anytime we get to see Malec charging into battle, protecting all those we hold dear. Speaking of battle, we see Luke being challenged by presumably one of his own pack members and we are not liking it one bit. We assumed there would be some fallout as Luke is taking part in the weekly Downworlder meetings lead by Alec and having been a Shadowhunter himself in the past. Not everyone is so keen to put their trust in the hands of Shadowhunters and subsequently the Clave, not that we can entirely blamed them. The Clave has done a piss poor job protecting the Downworld, and even the Mundane world, and has let Valentine slip through their fingers more than once. It will be interesting to see how Luke handles his precarious position and if he is able to remain peacekeeper between the two facets.

This intense new trailer quite literally raises the stakes higher than ever before, boldly stating that one will die by seasons end. Additionally, various interviews at SDCC with the cast confirmed we will see more than one death. We were shown a glance of Max lying on the ground looking worse for the wear, and we have a feeling the young Lightwood might be in jeopardy. While we can only speculate, we also have a feeling that Valentine might not make it out of this season alive. For those familiar with the books the series is based on, you know a certain runed-filled individual may possibly fall by the wayside. Although it’s important to note the series has made huge departures from the books to keep it fresh and exciting, so who falls before season’s end is anyone’s guess.

It’s hard to believe we are already heading towards the end of Season 2 and a finale of epic proportions. The only thing we are certain about for Season 3 is that we will get to see plenty more Maia, as Alisha Wainwright has been promoted to a series regular! In our last article we talked about the possibility of this happening for the talented actress, and we are more than delighted to know our predictions came true! She is a welcomed addition to this wonderful cast, and we can’t wait to see what she brings to the series now that she has more time to tell Maia’s story.

It’s nice to have some heartwarming news before the final four episodes tear at our heartstrings. We have a feeling we’re not prepared for what our favorite characters are about to face, both individually and together. Just know we are all in this together.
