Red Carpet Coverage: The Story of God

Pop Culturalist was delighted to cover the red carpet for National Geographic Channel’s world premiere of The Story of God. Produced by and starring Morgan Freeman, The Story of God is a six-part mini series that will bring viewers along on Freeman’s journey around the world to understand how faith connects everyone, rather than divides them. From Buddhism to Catholicism to Islam to Zorastrianism, Freeman traveled to seven different countries and immersed himself at great religious sites. They even explore how science intersects with faith. Freeman described the people he met along the show’s journey by saying, “You meet some very interesting people. We talked to very knowledgeable people and spiritual people–from rabbis to monks to priests.”

We were able to quickly chat with Morgan Freeman about The Story of God. One of the questions we asked him was what the biggest challenge he had during the process of filming the series was. He said:

I imagine the biggest challenge was formulating…So we’re gonna go to all these places and talk to all these people. What are we gonna ask them? What are we going to talk about? It’s like people say, “Would you like to meet the Dalai Lama?” No! “Why not?” And say what?! Like, “Hey, yo, Dalai what’s going on?” You know, so it’s basically: what are you gonna talk about? You have to have something germaine to talk about. You have to have questions that make some kind of sense to the people you’re asking the questions of.

As Morgan Freeman told us all on the red carpet, one of the surprising faiths he learned about was Zoroastrianism, and he had a key takeaway that he shared, “Well I am Zoroastrian–as I believe you are. Most of us are Zoroastrian because it’s just predicated on three basic tenets: good thoughts, good words, and good deeds. Doesn’t that incorporate all of us?” Yes, indeed it does.

The Story of God will begin airing on Sunday, April 3 at 9/8c on the National Geographic Channel.
