Ones to Watch: Connor Jessup of American Crime
American Crime: Season 2 is one of the most provocative shows on television. The ABC drama, led by Connor Jessup, brings unsettling issues including sexual violence, social hierarchy, and race to the forefront. It’s a tough show to watch but one you should be.
From the initial promos, it’s clear they aren’t afraid to push boundaries. I’ll admit I thought the show’s heavy topics would be too difficult to watch—and at times, it is—but in a good way. You’d be doing yourself a great injustice if you’re not watching American Crime. The show also features Connor Jessup—who is definitely one to watch!
Jessup plays Taylor Blaine, a high school junior trying to find his purpose in life. We’ve all been there. But after shocking photos surface of Taylor at the Leyland basketball Captains’ Party, his life is turned upside down. Things become more complicated when he accuses two players of drugging and assaulting him.
His talent is undeniable. The young Canadian actor brings so much honesty to his role as Taylor, he makes you feel every ounce of his character’s internal conflict and struggle. His creative choices are always spot on, knowing exactly what the scene demands. He knows when to remain silent, when to stutter, and when to release that dramatic single tear. These nuances are just as impactful as the dialogue itself, evoking emotions from viewers, at least, it did with me. You relate to this young man trying to find his way. You cry when he cries. And, ultimately you root for Taylor to find solitude.
You know an actor is one to watch when you want to find every work they’ve been in. So if you’re looking to binge-watch other projects that Connor has been involved in (I know I am), check out Falling Skies and The Saddle Club. The triple threat also writes, produces, and directs short films. His short, Boy, just made its debut at TIFF. Make sure to follow him at @connorjessup because you’ll be hearing a lot more from him.
