Indie Pop Siren Syd Releases Stripped-Down Version of “Insane”

2023 is off to a great start and that’s because of artists like Syd. The talented singer-songwriter and emerging talent recently released her hit new single, “Insane.” Produced by legendary award-winning producer Keith Thomas (Selena, Vanessa Williams, Amy Grant, Whitney Houston), the track blends an intense array of emotions during an ugly breakup. Pop Culturalist was lucky enough to speak with Syd about the song, stripping it down, and more!

PC: How did you discover your passion for music?
Syd: It was probably when I was around eight and other artists’ songs would come on. I realized I was passionate about music when I would get jealous of how good they were. I used to hear them and think, “If I don’t start making music soon, all of the good songs are going to get taken!”

PC: Who or what has had the biggest influence on your career?
Syd: The musicians I grew up with. Tommy Shane Steiner and Drew Womack were two key figures in my life that taught me how to move. They took me on and showed me the ropes. They would throw me to the wolves on stage even when I wasn’t necessarily ready which pushed me to be a better artist at a young age.

PC: Tell us about “Insane” and the inspiration behind the song.
Syd: Usually, I find inspiration from my own emotions, but in this situation, I pulled from what I believe my ex went through. Even though he was with me, I knew deep down he was thinking about someone else. Worst feeling ever, but it made for a great song!

PC: There are so many emotions in the song. What was it like getting to do an unplugged and stripped-down version?
Syd: We actually kept the vocals from the original track and just changed the instrumentation to make it sound more unplugged. It was cool being able to bring a different vibe to the song. I’m always down for broken-down songs that really showcase my voice.

PC: You worked with Keith Thomas to bring this song to life. How has collaborating with him pushed you as an artist and songwriter?
Syd: Keith Thomas is a guaranteed hitmaker. Always has been. On top of being talented as hell, he has grown to be one of my friends and a father figure. He pushes me to be a better artist. I trust him with my life, and I trust him with my music!

PC: As we look ahead to the rest of 2023, what can fans expect from you?
Syd: The fans can expect way more music. I have a whole plethora of songs in the arsenal ready to be released. They can also expect some exciting collaborations.

Syd: Deftones.

PC: First album you bought?
Syd: Born to Die, Lana Del Rey.

PC: First concert you attended?
Syd: Probably the Jonas Brothers!

PC: An album that changed your life and why?
Syd: It’s going to have to go with Born to Die, LDR again. This album helped me discover my own personal style, and it just spoke to my soul.

PC: A venue on your bucket list to perform at?
Syd: The Wiltern in Los Angeles.

PC: A must-have on the road?
Syd: My guitar and my light-up makeup mirror.
