Gilmore Girls: 5 Things That We Wished Were Different

Gilmore Girls fans rejoiced when Netflix finally aired the eagerly awaited follow-up to the hit television show. Original creators, Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino, returned to finally wrap up the series like they wanted–along with our beloved Gilmores (Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel, and Kelly Bishop).

Gilmore Girls was full of lovely and nostalgic moments. Obviously, seeing favorite characters back on screen brought a smile to my face (Scott Patterson as Luke! Yanic Truesdale as Michael! Liza Weil as Paris!), and seeing Stars Hollow intact was like a warm blanket. Lorelai’s wedding sequence was sheer beauty. The way the set looked, the music the scene was set to, and the whimsical and touching way it was acted all combined to make it one of the highlights of all four episodes. But we all know that the good comes with the bad. Unfortunately, Gilmore Girls couldn’t escape that. So, without further ado, we present the moments we were hoping would happen, that, well, fell short.

1. Richard Gilmore’s funeral was, overall, a great tribute. One moment, though, had me cringing the entire time. Lorelai has a very complicated relationship with her parents. I get it. That is one of the foundations of the show; however, when it came time for her to share a fond memory of Richard, she blew it. Majorly. Sharing multiple stories of when he was a bad father? I can imagine Lorelai sharing one not-so-good story at first, but then trying to save the moment by saying something weakly nice. She isn’t that callous and heartless. But, she didn’t. It was such a a sad and gross moment that I wish I could erase. [Side note: Lorelai’s monologue in “Fall” about the best memory of her father is, of course, a beautiful homage to Richard Gilmore.]
2. Some of the best scenes in Gilmore Girls were Lorelai and Rory matching their respective prowess of speech and bantering back and forth. Naturally, we couldn’t wait to get some meaty moments of just Lorelai and Rory trading quips. We got some, but in “Summer”, though, Lorelai and Rory turn super catty as they sit by the pool. Rather than coming off as slightly snarky, they came off as mean and snobby. Making fun of fat people? They would never!
3. Rory’s relationship with Logan (Matt Czuchry) would have been a much bigger deal to Lorelai than it was. After Lorelai’s reaction to Rory having an affair with married Dean (Jared Padalecki) back in season 5, there is no way Lorelai would be ok with it. She would have kept pestering Rory about it–especially after discovering that Rory had been lying to her the whole time about it (and, by the way, did Rory learn nothing from her past mistakes?).
4. We want more Sookie (Melissa McCarthy)! I know, in reality, filming schedules were probably tight, but there is no way that Sookie would have missed Lorelai and Luke’s pre-wedding day wedding (especially after Lorelai and Sookie’s heart-to-heart moment of reaffirming that they were best friends). While I’m being so demanding, it also would have been great to see Jackson, Sookie, and their son together on screen for at least one scene.
5. And, speaking of more, we wanted more Jess (Milo Ventimiligia) screen time. Where were the scenes of Rory and Jess spending more time together catching up and prepping for the wedding? I mean, Jess pushed Rory to actually get out of her rut and write something that would be meaningful (side note: did anyone else think of the scene from Anne of Green Gables where Gilbert tells Anne to write about Green Gables and the people she knows? Yeah, me too.). And, if all the rumblings are actually true about that Luke-Lorelai-Christopher parallel to Jess-Rory-Logan, then he definitely should have had a slightly bulkier role.
