Exclusive Interview: Pop Culturalist Chats with Manic Focus

Manic Focus is the electronic music project by John “JmaC” McCarten, a Denver-based producer who’s revolutionizing the industry with his brand of funk, soul, and new-era hip-hop. In the last six years, he’s released not one, not two, but six full-lengths, each showcasing his growth and evolution as an artist. His latest, Lost in a Digital World, solidified his place as one of music’s most diverse and exciting producers, highlighting his fearless approach to experimentation. Pop Culturalist caught up with Manic Focus to chat about the new release.

PC: How did you discover your passion for music?
Manic Focus: I was really excited about playing music when I was four. I took piano lessons for several years and got into making beats in high school. I’ve always loved music, and my family and friends have been very encouraging.

PC: Who or what has had the biggest influence on your career?
Manic Focus: My brother/manager Joe has had a big influence on my career. He inspired me to start my music career. After the first couple of years of shows, we were fortunate enough to tour with some big acts in our scene including Big Gigantic, GRiZ, The Floozies, and more. They have all had a big influence on my career and really helped me develop a fan base.

PC: Tell us about your new album, Lost in a Digital World. What inspired the collection?
Manic Focus: I’m always making music. This new album is a new chapter in my Manic Focus project. It combines everything I’ve learned over the years and is really inspired by fans and other musicians in the music industry.

PC: How does this album differentiate itself from your previous releases?
Manic Focus: This album incorporates all the tools and tricks I’ve learned over the years and expands on a lot of ideas I’ve had for a while. I don’t have nearly as many samples in this album as I have had in the past. I recorded a lot of this album at Neutral Sound Studio in New Orleans to give it a live feel. I also incorporated modular synthesis.

PC: You’ve had a lot of success already in your career. When you look back, is there a particular moment that sticks out to you?
Manic Focus: I’ve been fortunate enough to play Red Rocks several times with good friends. Every time I’ve played there, I’ve had an incredible time. I’m extremely grateful for all the opportunities I’ve had to play amazing venues and festivals. It’s hard to pick one moment!
