Exclusive Interview: Pop Culturalist Chats with Eric Leon

Eric Leon had a breakout year in 2019, blazing a trail in hip-hop with his new-age sound. But don’t take our word for it. Just ask the industry legends who are singing his praise, including Cool & Dre, Fat Joe, and DJ Khaled. With two million streams already under his belt, Eric is continuing his momentum with the release of “Lemme See” and his upcoming EP, We In The World, set to be released later this summer. Pop Culturalist sat down with Eric for an in-depth conversation.

PC: How did you discover your passion for music?
Eric: I discovered music when I was about twelve years old. I started to write my first songs at that age as well. My whole life really has been about music, and it has always been a huge part of who I am.

PC: Who or what has had the biggest influence on your career?
Eric: Definitely my mother. Even when I thought about quitting, she was always my biggest fan. She’s always pushed me to the max and continues to do so.

PC: You’ve had a lot of success already in your young career. When you look back, is there a particular moment that sticks out?
Eric: When I dropped a mixtape hosted by DJ Khaled. That’s for sure one of my biggest personal achievements.

PC: 2019 was a huge year for your career. What was the biggest lesson you learned about yourself as a man and as an artist?
Eric: 2019 was crazy. There were a lot of ups and downs, but I can say I grew from it personally and as an artist. I learned a lot about myself and how to better deal with personal things as well, such as my depression and anxiety, which I’m very open about. Growing up as a man directly affected my music. I matured a lot musically as well.

PC: Tell us about your new single, “Lemme See.” What inspired the song?
Eric: “Lemme See” was one of the quickest songs I ever made. TroyBoi and Mr. Kream produced the record. It’s really just a four-bar loop, so when they came up with the vibe in the studio, the lyrics just came so quickly. “Lemme See” is definitely a fun record—something to throw on at a party—the new summer anthem.

PC: Your new EP, We In The World, is set to be released this summer. What can fans expect?
Eric: Vibes! Expect vibes. Pretty much all the records from We In The World are fun party records. With everything going on in the world right now, we need some fun music. I’m hoping to bring that to the table to my fans and the world this summer.

PC: If you had to pick a song off of We In The World that best encompasses you as an artist, what would it be and why?
Eric: You heard it here first…track number two. “LITTY!” That’s all I can say! Fans stay tuned!
