Exclusive Interview: Pop Culturalist Chats with DC’s Legends of Tomorrow’s Ramona Young

Ramona Young is a legend on and off the screen. Currently, she’s starring as Mona Wu, a delivery girl turned time traveling superhero, in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. Pop Culturalist spoke with Ramona about her character’s evolution and joining the DC family.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow Questions

PC: Tell us about DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, your character, and what drew you to this project.
Ramona: DC’s Legends of Tomorrow is an action-drama-comedy about misfit superheroes who time travel together to save humanity. I play Mona Wu. Originally, she was a human delivery girl, who then gets slashed by a werewolf, and gains his powers. Mona joins the Legends soon after. The dynamic storylines and imagination wrapped around unique characters drew me to this project.

PC: You joined the cast in season four. Were there any nerves heading into the project given how successful the series is and how dedicated the DC fans are?
Ramona: Of course! The show has a life of its own, and being new, I wanted to make sure I contributed to that life successfully.

PC: Mona is one of a handful of original characters in the series. Was that an advantage or disadvantage for you as an actress?
Ramona: As an actress, having an original character was an advantage. Anything is possible for Mona. This makes it freeing and fun to play her.

PC: What can you tease about Mona’s arc this season?
Ramona: Mona is faced with new challenges sparked by Neron. She will need to rely on the help of her new friendships with the Legends and Time Bureau, but will she survive?

PC: What does it mean to you to be a part of the DC family?
Ramona: It’s a wonderful honor and privilege.

Career Questions

PC: How did you discover your passion for acting?
Ramona: It was a process. It took years for me to make a complete leap into acting full-time.

PC: What’s been the biggest lesson you’ve learned being a part of the industry?
Ramona: I learn major lessons in every milestone of my life. Currently, I’m learning about respecting the process, having patience, and enjoying the time it requires to be better and stronger.

PC: There’s been a lot of conversation about diversity and representation in Hollywood. As an Asian actor, what has your experience been like? Have you felt or seen the slow progress that’s being made?
Ramona: I’ve definitely walked into an audition room and seen the difference. I’m all for it. I hope we are able to reach a place where casting comes from more than just our “look” or the color of our skin.
