Younger Recap 2.12: When it Rains, it Pours
This is it, folks. The season finale of season 2 of Younger. Buckle your seat belts. It’s going to be an interesting ride to the end.
Liza (Sutton Foster) and Maggie (Debi Mazar) are en route to Thad’s funeral. Liza feels immense guilt about his death; she in convinced that her lie has killed Thad (Dan Amboyer). At the funeral, Liza debates on whether or not to tell Kelsey (Hilary Duff) the truth, but Maggie wisely talks her out of it for the moment. Two surprises happen at the funeral. The first is that Josh (Nico Tortorella) shows up (still looking great). The second is that Thad has an identical twin brother, Chad (hey, Dan Amboyer, glad you’re still on Younger!).
At the post-funeral reception at the Weber’s house, we get a montage of family photos. I bet those were fun to create. Lauren (Molly Bernard) explains that Thad and Chad were called the Webervi (nice little wink to the Winklevoss twins), and she explains how Thad always tricked his girlfriends into sleeping with Chad (so, did Kelsey accidentally sleep with him without knowing?). Kelsey notices all the women at the reception that she doesn’t know, but, dimly, does not put two-and-two together that Thad probably slept with all of them. Liza meets Chad–both Kelsey and Chad think Liza is super lucky to have survived the incident. Pile on the guilt. At the mention of Chad taking Thad’s laptop (“to protect his privacy”), Liza slyly tries to snag it. No such luck.
Over at the drinks table, Liza and Josh catch up. He admits that he’s wanted to be there for Liza ever since he heard the news. Surprisingly (or not), their little catch-up session ended with Josh and Liza in bed at Josh’s apartment. Personally, I would never leave…I mean, look at him! They talk about how sorry they each are (although Liza rightly tells him he has nothing to be sorry about), and how Liza’s lie is getting out of control. Then, they make out some more until…Greta arrives (she has a key to his apartment?? How serious are they?). Funnily, Liza has to escape out the fire escape in front of an Orthodox Jewish couple while Josh kisses/greets Greta (bad move, Josh. Even though I don’t like Great, just break up with her…).
At Empirical, Kelsey actually shows up to work, and Diana (Miriam Shor) brings Liza into a meeting with a famous Hollywood astrologist (“How to determine your shadow sign…that influences your brightest future” sounds…silly). Kelsey is quite argumentative in the meeting. I guess sudden death of a fiancé will do that to a gal (plus, she’s been dry-eyed since she found out about Thad’s death which has kept her preoccupied and upset about everything). Chad shows up at Empirical with the surveillance video of the accident; it shows Liza and Thad arguing. Uh-oh. Chad also kind of threatens that he will find out the truth eventually. So, Liza tells Kelsey about the video of Thad. It doesn’t go over so well. Kelsey claims she has to make her own mistakes–even marrying the wrong guy. I beg to differ since I am pretty sure Kelsey would have immediately told Liza if Josh had done the same thing. She then blames Liza for Thad’s death. Burn, burn, burn.
SHOCKER ONE: Because of her confrontation with Kelsey, Liza quits her job.
Liza lies and says she got another offer. Liza finds a new job with the help of her old housewife friend, Michelle (the new job is a saleswoman at the mall in New Jersey. Sad, sad life.). She runs into Lauren’s mom at the store, but asks her not to tell anyone she saw her. Cutting out her old “young” life, bit by bit…
Back at Empirical, Diana has a new temp assistant while Kelsey regrets her lash out at Liza. Charles (Peter Hermann) hears the news and goes on a quest to find out where Liza’s new job is…to no avail. Kelsey, though, finds out (never expect Lauren’s mom to keep a secret) and tells everyone. Charles goes out to New Jersey to confront Liza. He gives her a pep talk (“You work hard, and you try to be good, but shit happens”), and he tries to persuade her to come back to Empirical.
SHOCKER TWO: Charles kisses Liza in the middle of the department store.
Annnnd so Liza returns to Empirical. That must have been some kiss. She and Kelsey make up, and Kelsey finally cries for Thad.
SHOCKER THREE: Josh confronts Liza outside her apartment, and they make out. He says to her, “I’m all in.”
Phew. What a way to wrap up Younger‘s season 2. Will Liza actually get back together with Josh? Or will she begin a covert office relationship with Charles? Will she finally tell Kelsey about her age? Or will Chad discover the truth and expose her to everyone? We can’t wait to find out next season! In the meantime, I’ll be over in the corner looking for gifs of Josh.
Highligts:
“We chased the same beautiful girls” (Chad is clearly also talking about Kelsey, right?) “But whatever we did, Thad always had to come out ahead.” Um, I sense some sibling bitterness in that statement, Chad.
“You want to be sad together?” (Josh) Do I ever. I can feel the heat through the screen.
“I’m the one who is sorry…you deserve everything, and I was selfish.” (Liza) FINALLY. I am glad you at least told that to Josh. Took long enough.
“You certainly can be a force of nature.” (Josh) Um, yeah. That was pretty hot. The way Josh says that while leaning in to kiss Liza. Liza, hold on tight and don’t let him go!
“We’re all entitled to our own secrets.” (Kelsey) Oh, if you knew the truth about Liza, I don’t think you’d feel the same way.
“You’re running away from a life you created for yourself. As crazy as it was, it seems a lot more authentic than whatever this is.” (Maggie)
“I know where she’s working! A department store in New Jersey.” (Kelsey) “I suspect there are drugs involved in this story.” (Diana) LOL. No one likes New Jersey.
“Think about this” (Charles) HOLY MOLY. That is definitely a conflict of interests; Charles either wants her to come back to work, or he wants her in his bed…can’t have both. Or can he??
