To See or Not to See: Single by 30
Wong Fu Production has struck comedic gold with Single by 30. And, it’s easy to see why we’ve quickly fallen in love with the new original series, airing exclusively on YouTube Red. From the likable characters and storylines to the relatable subject matter, Single by 30 is one to add to your queue.
Peter (Harry Shum Jr.) and Joanna (Kina Grannis) are childhood best friends who are preparing to graduate high school. As the big day approaches, they worry about what the future holds—specifically with their love lives. Naturally, they make a pact to marry each other if they’re both single at 30. Flash forward to twelve years later when the pair bumps into each other as adults. Peter is now 30 and Joanna is a few months away. And, guess what, they’re both single. They decide they’ll help each other ease back into the dating scene and what results is a laugh-out-loud good time that’ll leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside.
Here are a few reasons why Single by 30 will undoubtedly strike a chord:
The Diverse and Talented Cast
One of the major draws when I initially started the series was Harry Shum Jr. I’ve been a fan since his Glee days and he’s fantastic in Single by 30, stepping forward and displaying his leading man qualities. But, let me tell you, the rest of the cast is equally as impressive. Kina Grannis is a powerhouse. Where did she come from? No, seriously, where? She brings a lot of light and shade to her character. While it seems like everything around her is falling apart, she remains calm, cool, and collected. And, Hillary Anne Matthews and Eric Ochoa will have you rolling on the floor. Their chemistry is infectious and hilarious.
It’s Actually Funny
There are a lot of shows that are labeled comedies but pack little to no laughs. That’s not the case with Single by 30. The writers poke fun at just about everything. They touch upon topics including the awkwardness of online dating to the expectations of your parents.
The Characters are Endearing
You can’t help but root for these characters. They’re all searching for happiness in their own unique ways. And, they’ll remind you of your own friends.
