To See or Not to See: Beyond

Back in October, it was announced that Freeform’s newest sci-fi series, Beyond, would be the network’s first binge-from-the-start show. What does that mean you ask? Well, following its premiere on January 2nd, all ten episodes will be available on Freeform.com, the Freeform App, Hulu, and On Demand. It’s a milestone for the network and a huge nod to the show. And, it’s a move that makes sense. The Freeform audience is primarily teens and millennials. And, they love to binge-watch. I mean, who doesn’t? But, is Beyond worth your time?

At the center of the story is Holden (Burkely Duffield), a young man who wakes up from a coma after 12 years and discovers he has abilities. These gifts put him in the midst of a dangerous conspiracy. And, he’s warned not to trust anyone, leaving him to question everyone and everything. He’ll try to piece together what happened to him and adjust to a world he no longer knows.

Beyond is stylish, immersive, and addictive. The show is pulling out all the stops with its special effects, redefining the notion of what can be done on television. And, it’ll have you on the edge of your seat with its twists and turns. Thankfully, you’ll be able to watch it in its entirety.

Beyond is bolstered by a superb cast (including a mature performance by Jonathan Whitesell, who plays Luke, Holden’s younger brother). Burkely Duffield is immaculate, particularly when displaying Holden’s child-like discovery. Viewers will feel as if they’re experiencing all of Holden’s firsts alongside him.

Beyond is the first hit show of 2017. It’s just an added bonus that we’ll be able to binge-watch the entire season in one sitting.
