We are three episodes deep into Freeform’s newest series The Bold Type and we are already in love! With three powerful leads, interesting storylines, and a fearless approach to women in the workforce, this complex new series has already caught our attention. Below we breakdown the strong female leads that make this new series so captivating.
Jane is a determined young writer poised on making her mark in media, played by the talented Katie Stevens whom you may recognize from the MTV series Faking It. Jane has a very clear vision of the writer she wants to be but her boss keeps pushing her outside of her comfort zone, trying to further her perspective as a writer. She’s also entered into a somewhat complicated flirtation with a fellow writer named Ryan, who works for a rival publication and has a more provocative writing style. Even though Jane is in the process of finding her voice, the encouragement she receives from her boss and best friends will give her the support she needs to do so. We already know Jane has what it takes to be one of the finest writers for the publication she writes for Scarlet Magazine.
Kat is the social media director for Scarlet Magazine, and a very accomplished one at that. Portrayed by the gifted Aisha Dee—who won over are hearts in the short-lived MTV series Sweet/Vicious—Kat tries to navigate the complicated world of social media while coming to terms with her sexual identity. Kat meets a beautiful Muslim artist by the name of Adena, who makes her question everything she thought she knew about herself. While Kat learns to accept this newly unlocked part of herself, she can lean on her friends to help her through it. A dynamo and huge asset to the magazine, Kat’s spunky, wonderfully confident personality has her quickly becoming a fan favorite.
Sutton is a highly capable assistant looking to breakthrough to the fashion industry, played by the delightful Meghann Fahy. Growing impatient with her lack of progress and desperately needing to take that next step, Sutton is trying to find her place in the world of fashion. She’s also engaged in a very hush hush relationship with an older board member by the name of Richard. With the help of her friends Jane and Kat, Sutton tries to strike a balance between her personal life and her professional life. With her go-getter attitude and charming personality, we have no doubt she will achieve anything she sets her mind to.
Each of these intriguing female protagonists are empowering and beautifully three dimensional, not to mention relatable. Their friendship with one another only strengthens the series. It’s refreshing to see a series that embraces women of all backgrounds and shows them supporting one another in their pursuits, rather than pitting them against one another. As long as The Bold Type continues to portray women in a positive light and provides relatable and socially relevant storylines, we have no doubt it’ll find its audience.
