Syfy Cancels The Expanse

Those damn Earthers!

Just as we reached the halfway mark of season three of the fan-favorite show, The Expanse, Syfy announced it will not be bringing the series back for an additional season. Deadline reports that Chris McCumber of NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, which owns Syfy, stated that canceling The Expanse was:

“an incredibly difficult decision. We want to sincerely thank The Expanse’s amazing cast, crew and all the dedicated creatives who helped bring James S.A. Corey’s story to life. And to the series’ loyal fans, we thank you most of all.”

The silver lining to this sad turn of events is that Syfy doesn’t produce the show: Alcon Entertainment does. Syfy doesn’t own the streaming rights to the show either: that belongs to Amazon Prime if you live in the U.S., Canada, or New Zealand. In addition, it’s labeled as a Netflix Original elsewhere worldwide.

Syfy only has rights to air The Expanse on its own cable network, and we all know the writings on the wall for that.

We’ve been following The Expanse since season one, and season three has been nothing short of exciting. For Syfy to pull the rug out from under The Expanse now just makes watching the rest of the season a bittersweet affair…

…But it doesn’t have to be! You can do your part and ask Netflix to pick it up by clicking here. On top of that, Alcon Entertainment co-founders, Andrew Kosovo and Broderick Johnson, are already shopping the show around:

“We are very disappointed the show will not be returning to Syfy. We respect Syfy’s decision to end this partnership but given the commercial and critical success of the show, we fully plan to pursue other opportunities for this terrific and original IP.”

If all else fails, at least we’ll have a good ending:
