SDCC 2023: Inside the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem Panel

Cowabunga! The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had left the sewers of New York City behind and invaded San Diego Comic-Con 2023! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem director Jeff Rowe and original co-creator Kevin Eastman delighted a packed Hall H with a twenty-minute sneak peek of the highly-anticipated film, discussed the legacy of the franchise, and more. For readers who aren’t lucky enough to be in San Diego, Pop Culturalist was on location to bring you inside the panel.

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, along with the writers of The Animation Guild, the film being covered here wouldn’t exist.

For the First-Time Ever: The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are Being Played by Actual Teenagers
That’s right! Actors Nicolas Cantu (Leonardo), Brady Noon (Raphael), Shamon Brown Jr. (Michaelangelo), Micah Abbey (Donatello), and Ayo Edebiri (April O’Neil) will be the voices behind these beloved characters in the latest iteration of the franchise. Director Jeff Rowe shared that each actor was given the space to improvise and bring their most authentic self to the character and how teenagers would speak today.

The Action-Packed Sneak Peek Was Everything We Wanted and More!
As a longtime TMNT fan, Mutant Mayhem embodies the spirit of the original comic while bringing a refreshing take. The animation is unlike anything I’ve seen before and was filled with humor, adrenaline-pumping action, and heart. But don’t take our word for it, co-creator Kevin Eastman has given his seal of approval and is already asking when we can expect the sequel!

There’s More Than One Mutant Villain!
The iconic Ice Cube will play the big bad Superfly in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, but he’s not the only villain wreaking havoc in New York City! Attendees were treated at a first look of all the mutants taking over the Big Apple which include Bebop (Seth Rogen), Rocksteady (John Cena), Leatherhead (Rose Byrne), Wingnut (Natasia Demetriou), Mondo Gecko (Paul Rudd), Ray Fillet (Post Malone), Genghis Frog (Hannibal Buress), and Baxter Stockman (Giancarlo Esposito).

Breaking News: Nickelodeon and Paramount Will Air the Original Animated Series in 2024
Co-creator Kevin Eastman dropped a bombshell for attendees at SDCC, announcing that Nickelodeon and Paramount have secured the rights to air the original animated series! If you weren’t around in 1987 when it initially aired, you’re in for a treat! Trust us.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem hits theaters on August 2nd.
