Pop Culturalist Chats with Mary-Charles Jones
Mary-Charles Jones stars as Sara Gable in last year’s highest rated new comedy, Kevin Can Wait, which made its epic season two return this September. The show follows a retired police officer who looks forward to spending more time with his wife and kids. Mary-Charles’ character, Sara, is navigating the trials and tribulations of high school and has grown a lot since we’ve last seen her. Pop Culturalist sat down with Mary-Charles to chat about her character’s evolution, what it was like working with Kevin James and Leah Remini, and learned five fun facts about this up-and-coming talent.
PC: For readers who may not be familiar with Kevin Can Wait, tell us about the show and your character.
Mary-Charles: Kevin Can Wait is a comedy TV show. This season, the show is about Kevin and his family going through the ups and downs of life. We see Kevin learning how to handle being a single dad. On the show, I play Sara. She’s the middle child and has a really special bond with her dad, which we get to see more of throughout the season.
PC: Kevin Can Wait was the highest rated new comedy. Did you feel any added pressure going into season two?
Mary-Charles: There’s always added pressure when the show does so well in the first season. I think, however, we just tried to look at the show the same way and tried to make it funnier.
PC: What was it like returning to set?
Mary-Charles: It was wonderful to see everyone when coming back for season two. We are one big family so it’s like a reunion when we get back together.
PC: How has Sara grown and changed since the last time we saw her?
Mary-Charles: Sara has definitely matured this season. Style wise, she is starting to stray from that tomboy-ish look to a more mature high school girl look. I think Kevin, as a single dad, leads to some great comedic moments between Sara and himself.
PC: Leah Remini is a new addition for season two, what was it like working with her?
Mary-Charles: Leah is such a joy to work with! She is so funny and kind to all of the cast. I love hanging out with her! She is such a talented actress and I absolutely love watching her work.
PC: How did you and Kevin James build your father-daughter relationship?
Mary-Charles: I think the relationship came really naturally. Kevin is a dad himself, so it was very easy for us to build that relationship.
PC: What are you most excited for fans to see this season?
Mary-Charles: I am so excited for fans to see how Sara really grows this season. I also can’t wait for everyone to see Kevin and Leah together because they are so funny and really complement each other.
