It’s safe to say you’ve probably heard Kristen Li’s voice. She’s a rising voice-over artist, who’s lent her talents to projects including Monster’s Inc, Monsters University, and Teen Titans Go. She’ll next portray Bubbles in The Powerpuff Girls reboot. Yes, they’re bringing it back! And, we can’t wait. Pop Culturalist was lucky enough to chat with Kristen about her career and The Powerpuff Girls reboot.
PC: Were you familiar with the series before you auditioned?
Kristen: Yes! I used to watch the show with my dad when I was younger.
PC: How did you prepare for your audition?
Kristen: Since I used to watch the show, I already knew the character. All I had to do was brush up on some of the inflections.
PC: Did you feel pressure voicing this iconic character?
Kristen: When I first booked the role of Bubbles, I was a little nervous and felt the pressure because the show is well-known. Now, I feel more comfortable because I’ve found the similarities between me and Bubbles.
PC: How is the reboot different from the original?
Kristen: The reboot is very similar to the original series but there are some differences. For example, the girls have cellphones, new superpowers, and there are also new villains!
PC: How did you get started in voice work/acting?
Kristen: I have always been in the entertainment business. I originally started out with print/modeling. After that I went into commercials, and then theatrical and voiceover.
PC: What’s your dream role?
Kristen: I would like to play something supernatural in a show like The Vampire Diaries or Supernatural.
PC: Which character have you related to the most?
Kristen: I would have to say Bubbles. Bubbles and I are the most alike because we are both outgoing, love animals, and enjoy helping people.
PC: You were previously a competitive figure skater. How did you make the transition into acting?
Kristen: The transition was very smooth because when I was a figure skater I had a very hectic schedule. It included waking up at 7AM, doing off ice training, skating for 4-6 hours, then coming home and still having to do homework. My schedule is still busy and I get up at the same time, but I can stay home to do schoolwork and practice my craft.
PC: What advice would you give a young actor trying to get their big break?
Kristen: I tell them to make sure they balance their schedule. Scheduling is very important because it makes you more organized. Make sure you to do your schoolwork but also practice your craft.
PC: Guilty pleasure T.V. show/movie?
Kristen: Gossip Girl
PC: Favorite play or musical?
Kristen: Hamilton
PC: Favorite book?
Kristen: Percy Jackson & the Olympians
