NYCC: Shadowhunters Cast Answers Your Fan Questions

If there was any doubt about how passionate the Shadowhunters fandom is, that was put to rest at this year’s New York Comic Con. Fans queued up in the early hours of the morning to get a glimpse of the cast and they didn’t disappoint. This year’s guests included executive producers, Todd Slavkin, Darren Swimmer, Matt Hastings, and stars, Kat McNamara, Matthew Daddario, Isaiah Mustafa, plus new series regular, Alisha Wainwright.

The conversation had it all: laughs, heartfelt stories from the community, a new sizzle reel, and a BIG surprise that the cast didn’t even know about…we’re getting ten more episodes this summer!

Following the discussion, the cast and executive producers met with the press and we asked them all your burning questions. We also wanted to personally thank everyone who submitted a question—we had hundreds of submissions!

Darren Swimmer: It’s in there. I can’t think of an actual episode that addresses a topic in the way we did last season, but it’s going to be part of the following season.

Todd Slavkin: Although in this season, there’s a lot of political stuff. Not like what we did in 2×13, but there are a lot of prejudices and discrimination that’s naturally part of the world of Shadowhunters, created by Cassie Clare.

Maia and Simon’s relationship will complicate things and create a racial divide, but when I say racial divide, it’s within the context of the show: werewolves vs. vampires. We’ll also see a struggle between the Downworlders and the Shadowhunters.

Matt Hastings: Absolutely! It’s baked into the show.

Alisha Wainwright: On a whole, that will be the case. But I still think for Maia’s territorial nature, she will continue to interact with the people she’s closest to, just because she doesn’t like meeting new people. So, when she does meet new people, we’re going to see what those dynamics are like. We have to remember, it’s not easy for Maia. She doesn’t shake people’s hands when she meets them. Think about how she met Simon—she didn’t like him. It took her an entire episode for her to be okay with him. I think we’ll continue to see that behavior and we’ll delve into a little about her past including what it was like to become a werewolf.

I want her to interact with others more, like I want to see her and Malec go out, like a double date. Oh my god, what if Simon, Maia, Alec, and Magnus went on a double date! Tweet the show runners that.

Kat McNamara: That would be cool!

Matthew Daddario: It would be interesting, but not in the first half. Alec is mostly focused on Magnus. Jace has some stuff going on.

Kat McNamara: Yeah, even with Clary. Jace has become removed from a lot of characters, but Clary, too, has become removed, from Alec, from Simon, from Luke, because she is harboring this huge secret and that becomes a huge strain. They’re screwed in a sense. They know the secret will come out. They know they’ll be in huge trouble for it and they want to lessen the collateral damage, which unfortunately means leaving Alec in the dark.
