NYCC 2018: DC Universe’s Titans
The cast of the highly anticipated superhero series Titans came to New York Comic Con, and we couldn’t be more excited. And, we’re not the only ones excited: the 11-episode TV show was renewed for season 2 before season 1 even began!
For those not familiar with the comics, Titans follows Robin/Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) after he leaves Batman behind and tries to figure out who he is on his own. A teenager, Rachel Roth aka Raven (Teagan Croft), is discovering she’s incredibly powerful and commits not-so-good acts under the influence. She goes on the run and ends up in Detroit, where Dick is. Beyond that, we’ll meet Kory Anders aka Starfire (Anna Diop), Dawn Granger aka Dove (Minka Kelly), Hank Hall aka Hawk (Alan Ritchson), and Gar Logan aka Beast Boy (Ryan Potter). All of those actors were at NYCC and chatted with us about what we can expect from the show and how they brought their characters to life.
Brenton Thwaites talks about Batman and Robin’s relationship:
“Batman took Dick Grayson in at a time when he had lost his parents and decided to mentor him. He gave him everything…I think underneath it all is that love that a father would have for their son. But the way that Bruce has been fighting and the brutality and ferociousness that he inflicts on his opponents has driven Dick to go away and find a different way of fighting crime…On that journey he realizes he doesn’t have to be that brutal, that ferocious, that destructive. So he decides to figure out a new identity.”
“When I was growing up, there was no face that looked like me on television. The only place I could find that was in manga or in anime. And, even that, there was a little distance to because I sit on the fence looking into two yards. There are a number of biracial people in America that I think will be able to, I think, resonate with Beast Boy simply based off his heritage and upbringing and where he’s at mentally and emotionally.
