How Kat Moran Found Strength Through Song—and Shared It With the World
Kat Moran has always worn her heart on her sleeve, using music as both a mirror and a lifeline. But with “Fight for Ukraina,” the singer-songwriter channels her artistry into something even more profound—a stirring anthem born from personal pain and national pride. The track captures the resilience of a people and the emotional toll of war, offering solidarity to those who need it most.
Inspired by her own Ukrainian heritage and the stories of loved ones still living through unimaginable circumstances, Kat spent six months crafting the song’s message, lyrics, and sound. The process became a form of healing—and a call to action. With the help of her creative circle, including her husband and longtime collaborators, she transformed her vision into a powerful piece of music and a hauntingly beautiful music video that juxtaposes innocence and devastation.
Pop Culturalist caught up with Kat to talk about the emotional journey behind “Fight for Ukraina,” the power of community, and the healing that comes through vulnerability. She also gave us a glimpse into what’s next, including her foray into new genres and an upcoming dance-pop release that proves her creative evolution is just getting started.
PC: You’ve spoken beautifully about wanting to create impact through your craft, and your single “Fight for Ukraina” is a powerful reflection of that. Can you share what sparked that shift in mindset and how creating this song helped you reconnect with that sense of purpose?
Kat: Thank you so much! I’ve always written songs based on my own emotional struggles. The first one that really made an impact was “I’ll Be Alright,” which I wrote during a very difficult time while dealing with Crohn’s Disease. I was really sick, and writing that song was my way of coping. I had no idea it would go on to help so many others living with IBD and other autoimmune diseases get through their own tough times. “Fight for Ukraina” came from a very similar place. I was writing from my own pain, and I hoped it could bring comfort and strength to others experiencing this horrible war. Seeing people connect with the song and feel supported was truly incredible—I couldn’t have asked for a better response.
PC: This is such a resonant anthem, especially considering the inspiration behind it—and I know it took six months to write. What was that process like, putting all of those emotions into words? And when did you feel it finally expressed everything you needed it to?
Kat: At first, it was incredibly hard to find the right words to express how I felt. I was experiencing so many different emotions and just tried to write exactly what I was feeling. I went through countless versions of the lyrics, often sitting down with my husband to figure out what needed to be refined or changed. I also shared the lyrics with my father, who’s in Kyiv, as well as with friends and family in Ukraine. It was really important to me to get their input and ensure the message came through clearly and respectfully. There was a lot of tweaking and rewriting along the way. Honestly, I never truly felt like the song was “finished.” I probably could’ve kept rewriting it forever—partly because I was scared to release it. I didn’t know how my friends and family would respond. But when I sent the final version to my dad, he called me back in tears and said, “We need to film a music video.” Then I shared it with my brother, my mom, and some close friends, and their response was so powerful and supportive. That’s when I knew it was ready to be shared with the world.
PC: You brought together a really special group of collaborators to help bring this song to life. How did their perspectives and contributions shape the direction it ultimately took?
Kat: This song wouldn’t be what it is without the incredible team behind it. My husband, Kent Moran, our producer Donnie Klang, my father, and so many of my friends and family supported me every step of the way. Their feedback and encouragement truly shaped the direction of the song. They helped me stay grounded in the message while pushing me to be honest and vulnerable in the writing. I’m forever grateful—I couldn’t have done it without them.
PC: The music video is visually haunting—it powerfully captures the grief, strength, and resilience at the heart of the song, especially with the raw, stripped-back moments woven alongside real footage from Ukraine. How did that vision come together so quickly, and what was most important for you to convey through it?
Kat: Even though I had been working on the song for six months, once it was finished and we decided to film the music video, everything came together incredibly fast. From planning the shoot to filming, editing, and post-production—it all happened within one week. We came up with the idea to cast a young Ukrainian girl who resembled me to represent both my own childhood in Ukraine and the children currently living through this war. We felt her innocence would add a powerful emotional layer and help us portray the war through a child’s eyes.
I also had the idea of performing “Fight for Ukraina” at a protest and incorporating that into the video. I started looking for upcoming rallies and found the Taras Shevchenko march in NYC. I reached out to the organizers, Svitanok NYC, and they were incredibly gracious—allowing us to film the protest and giving me the opportunity to sing the song in front of a crowd. It was such an emotional and powerful experience to be there, marching with others in support of our country and our freedom. I’m so grateful we were able to capture that moment and include it in the video.
PC: Outside of “Fight for Ukraina,” what’s ahead for you in 2025?
Kat: I just released a new single called “Ghost Town,” and I’m incredibly excited about it. It’s my first time working in the drum and bass genre, and creating it was such a fun and unique experience. The drop ended up being so danceable that there’s even a TikTok dance challenge happening right now, which has been amazing to watch! I’m also currently working on a dance-pop single with my husband, Kent Moran, which we’ll be releasing later this summer. I can’t wait to share more soon!
