Sofi Vonn is one of music’s most exciting up-and-coming artists and possesses a voice that will stop you in your tracks. A vibrant storyteller, Sofi paints lavish tapestries with her words which perfectly complement her exceptional vocal talents. Pop Culturalist recently caught up with Sofi to discuss her latest single, “Losing Control.”
PC: You’ve had so much success already in your career. When you look back, is there a particular moment that stands out?
Sofi: Thank you! I need to remind myself of that more often. Hitting 100,000 streams on Spotify for the first time with “Songs” was definitely an exciting moment. I also often think about how only two years ago I did my first ever open mic in London which is wild to me.
PC: What is your songwriting process like when you’re working on a new tune? How has that changed/evolved as time has gone on?
Sofi: My songwriting process is slightly different for each song, but I’ll usually start out with lyrics and a melody and then strip that down into chords. Sometimes I start with a guitar and go through my voice notes to see if anything fits. Most recently I’ve been enjoying freewriting and that’s actually led me to a different writing style which I’m currently exploring.
PC: You have a new single out now. Tell us about “Losing Control” and the inspiration behind the song.
Sofi: I originally wrote the song about four years ago when I was living in New York. I was DJing more at the time and wanted to produce a track that I could sing live. I came up with the idea while at a rave, and it was the first song I ever released. It’s basically about having a good time and partying while being reminiscent of my hometown.
PC: This song is a full-circle moment for you. Why was now the right time to release it and how much more special is it because of all the growth you’ve done these past few years?
Sofi: Reworking it now that I have more songwriting knowledge was so fun because I always saw potential in the song, and when I released it I would have never thought I’d be where I am now in just a few years! It felt like now was the right time to release it because the original was released three years ago and I’m at a certain point in my career where you can really hear the progression vocally and lyrically. It’s also just a fun song for the end of summer!
PC: As we look ahead to the rest of 2023 into 2024, what can fans expect from you?
Sofi: Much more music! I’ve also got a few videos in the pipeline and am hoping to go on my first tour in 2024. I’ve got a long list of things I want to achieve by the end of next year, but I won’t jinx it!
